dei Posted July 4, 2019 Share Posted July 4, 2019 Drove the Special around the northern shore of Lake Erie Sunday. Stopped at the dock in Kingsville, Ontario where we found this old boat was put back into operation after the "New One" developed fuel issues. They service the people and tourists on Pelee Island in the middle of Lake Erie. Met another "cruiser" doing the same thing as us on that dock. Stopped at what used to be a beach near my parents cottages outside of Pointe Pelee National Park only to find with the high water levels the sand was gone and to protect the road way there was huge boulders there instead. That pour cottage owner behind the car is going to loose his shed when the next rough storm hits in the right direction. After getting to Wheatley Harbour (a major fishing port on Lake Erie) we turned aound and went back to Kingsville for dinner. Then just had to stop in Essex, Ontario for a shot in front of the train station that hs been restored. I'm grateful the pastor didn't center me out for "seemingly" keeping an eye on the car through a window seat more than paying attention to his sermon ! Today we attended a car show less than half a mile away from where the car was squirreled away for over 25 years. Found a few people that knew the owner but seems he bought and restored the car solely for an investment and was never seen driving it. Not sure of the miles traveled but since I last fueled up on 7/2 I have put 184 miles on it going nowhere in particular. Still, sometimes you get a decent picture right in your own driveway: And sometimes you get a decent picture out on the road: And sometimes the best opportunities for pictures occur just before you find the right spot: Yet, it is always fun to see decent pictures even if they are not optimal framed. BUICK RACER Posted July 8, 2019 Share Posted July 8, 2019 Finally got the '68 (Little Red) out of the trailer today, from it's excursion to the GS Nationals in BG, KY last October. Put some ethanol free in it and went over to see the "The Old Guy" since I hadn't see him since March, he's still old and crotchety! No wait curmudgeoning. cxgvd Posted July 12, 2019 Share Posted July 12, 2019 (edited) It's very odd, in the past 4 years of restoring my blue 1915 McLaughlin I have never photographed it with my 1913 Buick model 31, until today. I'm getting the '13 ready for a 5 day AACA Snapper's tour and road tested the car today. Since the last outing I swapped out all of the clevis pins in the brakes and clutch, changed to a higher quality fuel cutoff tap, drilled out some loose rivets and installed grade 8 nuts and bolts in their place and filled all of the grease cups and lubed the chassis. There will be 65 pre 1916 cars in Kingston and I DO NOT want to be the guy sitting on the side of the road trying to fix something which could have been done at home. The car must be reliable for the next 600 to 700 miles. Tomorrow, Saturday, we are driving over to RM Restorations for cars and coffee. It is a different world, walking past Packards and Cadillacs to get to Duesenbergs and Ferraris. A life style I would like to become accustomed to. They have a 1910 Daimler, first choice of British royalty. Awesome. Probably overstated the fear of having a breakdown, these cars quit often and there is no shame in it. We all maintain membership in AAA for a reason, the occasional tow truck ride back to the hotel and trailer. Just got off the phone with another Model 31 owner, this time from NY state. The Snapper's tour will be his 1st outing with the car and a week before the tour his car started to run with little power. He thinks oil is going past the rings and fouling the sparkplugs, I suggested too rich a fuel mixture because I recall when that happened to me and how the Buick behaved. He is also running a Remy magneto, which I believe may be an issue. I offered him the loan of a spare Bosch which I trust I will not need and may solve his problem? Amazingly, there was only two cars that passed us while we were here taking pictures, unlike the last visit where there were numerous trucks blasting by. So I was relieved and got a few new photos: Here is what the view looks like to the sensible people And on the drive over, since the route was lightly traveled I had a chance to get this picture, which is another one I always hoped to score! First up is "Sliver Annie" Not a true BCA style Restoration, but probably a lot of fun to drive: I've heard of wood framed cars, but this one is : Yep! Plywood! This next one is more true to it's date of manufacture: In the Hemmings Museum What you cannot see is the "3" under the speedometer needle 36000 miles! I think that is quite a lot for a 1910 considering the following fact sheet: Keep in mind there is no cabin heater! Yikes! Buicknutty Posted July 13, 2019 Share Posted July 13, 2019 Great pics and post, John! Well, I had the '56 Roadmaster out for the first time this year last night. It has been laid with a couple of things, which had taken some time to get sorted. First, the brakes, I completely overhualed them about five years ago, with new linings, master cylinder, and all new lines. This originally a California car, and all of the lines were still original, except for one at the back which was damaged some time ago, and replaced, of course. So, I did all of them, mainly for peace of mind, however the issue I had was with the linings. After all the work and money, it stopped terrible! Compared to the '41 Roadmaster which has smaller drums, and no power assist, I've give the '41 as having much better braking. Now that we are settled in the new place, I pulled the shoes off ans sent them out to a place called Porterfield Brakes, in California, and they re-shoed them with Kevlar based lining material. So, that took some time, but the main hold up was the broken left vent window frame, so having got that back a short a while ago, I set to getting it back together. New seals as well, of course, which took a lot of fiddling to get in right. The door flipper is still a bit wonky. Only about 10 miles last night, and it was so nice to feel the smooth dynaflow and nailhead pushing me down the road again! Running great, and brakes feel better, but they need seating in and then a readjustment before I'll really know. Although I endorsed the over the counter shoes I put on my '56, I am rethinking that now. I understand the idler arm on my car is showing some looseness, but I have had the brakes pull both left and right on me, as well as no pulling to either side. Probably time to invest in rebuilding the center link for me to tell if I have a brake shoe problem. @DShip I never counted the number of cars, but typically they park em in the spots around the center island of the lot. Then they park them as far out onto the grass as possible on the outer edge of the two parking lots, and then, park em 2-3 rows across in the lane between the spots. Depending on activity, they will also park them in the driveway past the building out to the road. If they fill all that they send people to park at the hotel across the street, which is up on a hill, so those cars tend to get overlooked. However, for the couple of events I have attended this year they have not filled the lanes entirely. Last night they did fill em, and had cars parked on the driveway next to the building. Check the picture: @Brooklyn Beer The farm is on Rt 7 in the town of Hoosick, NY. This is just outside the Tibbetts State Forest. dei Posted July 15, 2019 Share Posted July 15, 2019 Drove the Special today but not too far as we attended a car show held at an Italian Club near me. Perfect property with trees for a show. Managed to be in the shade all day and the pavilion / kitchen was very close by which served a good variety of food from the usual car show burgers and such... I think the shade made my friends Riv look even darker. We stayed till 3:30 then drove over to my sons for a brief visit then dropped my wife off at home before taking the Special back to her garage. 2 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
