Raise your hand if you drove at least one old Buick this weekend

Recommended Posts

We get sun dogs far too regularly at this time of year...really pretty set this morning...but for them to form it tends to be clear and cold.  I laughed when I checked the forecast late this afternoon as our “Extreme Cold Advisory” had ended - the overnight wind chill equivalent is predicted to be only -39C.

https://weather.gc.ca/city/pages/mb-38_metric_e.html - note that the page can switch between Celsius and Fahrenheit with a click by the current temperature.

It’s a perverse pride in this hardiness...akin to folks in the Australian Outback, but on an opposite end of the temperature scale.

We expect to do about a 200+ mile drive in the '37 Roadmaster on Saturday:

New Orleans to Morgan City for a CARS & COFFEE from 9 until 10:00 AM,

then on to Patterson, LA to visit the Wedell - Williams Aviation Museum and the Cypress sawmill Museum,

from there, down the road to a Golf Club restaurant for lunch,

and then to Schriever, LA where Fred & Debbie will host desserts and a Garage Tour,

then to Luling, LA to drop off our son-in-law, and back home again

Then on Sunday - just a short drive in the '37 80C to the local Corvair Group annual party and buffet (our Corvair is temporarily on jackstands), so just drive the BiiiiG Buick as she sits majestically among her diminuitive younger corporate cousins.

Pictures to follow ... check out this link - might need to cut and paste the link:

****  Drove 230 miles over the weekend - 220 on Saturday, and 10 more on Sunday

A gentleman - TV Star on one of the cable shows about Louisiana Swamps and local folks - fellow by the name of "ROADIE" - coordinates the Morgan City Cars& Coffee on the 2nd and 4th Saturday of each month, and is using our 1937 Roadmaster Phaeton on their Facebook page.

THis shot is from the Cypress Sawmill Museum. Old growth cypress was a huge industry in Louisiana, and was poorly managed in the early part of the 20th century.

Being a bit of crazy guy, I decided to take the '41 Roadmaster out for a drive this afternoon. Now, here in Ontario, we, like the midwest are experiencing record to near record cold temps. I have been keeping it in the unheated, but attached garage, so it is a bit warmer, but not much, than the outside temps which were about -5F at the time. I figured if she'd start, I'd take it out for a drive, and start it did, a bit slow and I didn't think it would go for a sec, then it did, and settled quickly into a nice fast idle.

Also, yesterday, we had the most snow we've had so far this winter, about 8-10 in., but the roads were cleared, and there is no salt on them at the moment. Partly due to the low temps, and also due the crops that are grown near all of these roads.

The surprising thing was how nice and smooth and quiet it was, just about like always. Only the speedo cable made noise for the first couple of miles. For those that have driven in these really cold temps, you know what I mean, as even new cars tend to squeak, rattle, and ride rough till warmed up.

Of course, a modern car it isn't, and the heater and defroster left quite a bit to be desired. It was getting pretty fogged up on the inside by the time I got home. Too cold for pictures, so you will have to trust me. About 10 miles driven in it today.

Thanks for the ride Elpad!  I am really missing my cars right about now!  And this week will be filled with trashy weather in my area.

Correct. Staying some days around Miami and then going down the US-1 to the south til it's end.

I am looking out the window at about 4" of snow that came down since dawn, more coming, then maybe rain. I was planning to get my '60 Electra out Thursday and take a ride along Lake Ontario with my Wife and have dinner at a nice place we know for our 37th wedding anniversary. We have been able to do that for the last few years. We'll see.

I looked up the gem for 37 years. It is alabaster- gypsum and calcite. Maybe I will pick up a 4X8 piece of drywall and make a nice section of garage wall for her. If I can get it home dry.

No pictures. Finally got the Buick out of the parking stall by digging out 6 inches around it. Much rocking back and forth to get out of the spot, and dragged my front wheels turned straight out. Roads were clear and the parking lots were plowed except for mine and the one above it. The Taco Bell was well worth the effort. Getting into a new spot was a bit challenging, and I sunk straight into someone else's spot sideways. So, I spun the rear tires until the car swung in straight. We're expecting 6 inches more, so we'll see how it goes. Looks like I'm grounded for the weekend travel!
