Buicknutty Posted October 1, 2020 Share Posted October 1, 2020 I'm a bit behind here, but I'll offer my belated congrats for a Happy Birthday to Bernie! Also, a tour we were supposed to this week was moved ahead to last Friday, and then that one was going to be a very long day. We took the Reatta, and the trip was nearly 500 miles, we started just before 7:30 AM, and then drove 2 hrs plus to get to the starting point, then the long tour, and then over 3 hrs to get home. In between we had a great tour, and due to the issues with going into eat at times, we all brought a picnic lunch and had a great spot to stop at. Fortunately the weather was great. However the roads were not the typical ones we usually tour on, as we went over some of the worst gravel roads our leader could find. One was called, "Devils Four Mile Road", narrow, rutted and gravel, steep climbs that I struggled to get traction on. We had a few of these roads, so it was very slow going at times. However, we all made it through without incident. Though the cars look nice, everyone's car is a driver, not show cars. Here are a few pics, where I stopped to take a few shots in the roads. Most of these mentioned were single lane, and at times the weeds on both sides of the roads were brushing against our cars. Only 10 cars, and the tour leader had the oldest in his '32 Chev. Paul White Posted October 4, 2020 Share Posted October 4, 2020 Hello all,, Ursula First day of day-light savings here in Australia, well at least in New South Wales, our cousins in the state north of here, Queensland, do not follow us for various reasons, one apparently being that it upsets milking the cows. Anyway, it was another gloriously sunny day with a top temperature of 83F. My wife, Ursula, accompanied me on one of my favourite short trips out into the countryside for a late lunch under a canopy of grape vines. Afterward, we dropped into a newly opened gourmet food shop run by two young blokes in an original 1930s local store. Of course Ursula parted ways with a wad of money, but at least it is supporting local business. Only a short 35 mile round trip today but well worth it. It is about day 8 for us here in NSW without any new CV19 infections, and to some degree things seem to becoming normalised. Hope you are all safe out there. We have quite a few family restaurants run by Greeks at this end of the state. At least twice a week we get out to enjoy the favor of old Greece. The cruise-in is run by the South Coastal Corvette Club and open to all cars. Coffee and Dunkin' donuts were served. EmTee Posted October 4, 2020 Share Posted October 4, 2020 (edited) Drove the GP in a fall tour today with the local Pontiac and Studebaker clubs together with the Oneida Lake AACA. There were a couple of nice Buicks in the group as well. First, this really clean little '62 Skylark with 35K miles and that sweet little aluminum V8. Last, but certainly not least, was this one of a kind '38 Century pick-up. This was originally built to haul Seabiscuit's trailer. (Yes, that Seabiscuit: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seabiscuit ) According to the gentleman who owns it, the car had gone from a museum to a junkyard. The current owner restored the car when he found it 20 years ago. Still has its original 320 straight eight. We're still a week or two from peak fall color here, but it was still a nice ride and good company! I have had a couple of younger people question me on old cars and how they are destroying the the planet, my response, other than to point out that constructions of new cars creates enormous pollution not to mention all the plastic and toxic battery waste that needs to be dealt with when they are junked after 5-10 years like an out of fashion sweater that is thrown at at the end of a season, is to suggest I am doing my part in getting rid of all that terrible crude oil as quickly as possible!, generally they walk away scratching their heads. 7 1 2 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Buicknutty Posted October 6, 2020 Share Posted October 6, 2020 I finally got a 4 core rad for the Electra done up, and I got it installed this morning. So I used the Electra for some errands to test drive it, and then took it to the native reservation for a full tank of much less expensive premium. I ended up driving it about 55 miles today, and it ran beautiful. Last year I when we drove it to the National it ran hotter than I would have liked, that was with a 3 core, but it was a standard type of core, and this one is a 4 core high efficiency one. Ran cool, but it was a cool day, things would have to be really bad to run hot in this weather. Sure is feeling like an early Fall though. Likely I won't get a chance to heat test it till next year. No pictures, you you folks will have to trust me! We have another tour we can take one of the Buicks on this coming weekend, so it will be a toss up between the Electra or the '41. My Cadillac CTS wagon finally decided it didn't want to be a car anymore--maybe some soup cans or a nice refrigerator--so I've been driving the '41 Buick for the last ten days or so. However, unbeknownst to me, Melanie took some of the settlement money we got from Cadillac (you may recall that the CTS wagon's malfunctioning power tailgate mangled my hand and then their customer service rep told me to go screw myself when I asked about getting it fixed under a recall--I told GM's lawyers I would think of her fondly when I cashed their check) and bought this, with which she surprised me today: I've been admiring the Regal TourX for quite a while and talking about buying one, but it didn't make sense to get rid of an operational car that I liked. But the CTS becoming a malfunctioning car made the decision for us, I guess. Melanie has apparently been working on this for months, as she wanted it to be a 50th birthday present but couldn't get it together in time. Better still, this isn't an ordinary TourX, but it was the car used for display purposes down at The Tubes, GM's world headquarters in Detroit. It's a 2019 model but it's still brand new, and because of its use as a show car, the paint isn't standard refrigerator white but rather a kind of metallic, pearly white that looks awesome in the sun. Loaded with every available option except a sunroof, which I didn't want anyway. Just delivery miles plus some getting on and off the trailer, essentially a new car. I drove it around the block and it's a nice car--bigger inside than the CTS, although not quite as much power, and I think the Buick is quite handsome even though the CTS is still the best-looking wagon ever built. Meh, I'm a 50 year old man driving a station wagon, who cares? I like the car and I love my wife. That's the right order of things. Woo hoo! Larry Schramm Posted October 8, 2020 Share Posted October 8, 2020 (edited) Well a couple of things. We had a Buick visitor last week. "Dandy Dave" Brennen was in town. We spent some time together and among other things we went to my shop and he got to see my newly acquired Model T. We drove it around the shop yard. He approved of the performance. The crazy thing is he got to give my wife a drive in the T before I got to give her a ride. After his visit, Joyce and I went to Kalamazoo on Thursday to The Gilmore Museum one day tour on Friday and show on Saturday. It was a great day for a ride even though the day started about 45degF for driving. As the day went on, it warmed up to about 55degF. Still a nice day for a drive in an open car. The tour ended up with a 93 mile run for the day. The show on Saturday was fun getting together with a large number of prewar car owners. It was gratifying to see 8 or 9 Stanley Steamer cars with most of them on the tour with us. Here are a couple of pictures from the show. Tomorrow we will go out for the last drive of the season because the car will be going to the trim shop on Friday for a new top. We are already getting the car ready for next years touring season. Not to mention how much time we spend tuning and maintaining the cars for the little mileage they actually get, which means they run pretty efficiently. The one time I had to take the 67 Electra through emissions testing it passed with flying colors! Tomorrow it goes to the trim shop for a new top. Besides taking a drive around town, we ran some errands. Went to FedEx, Sams for gas, Home Depot for some flowers, and finally to Kroger for some grub. Great day out. Paul White Posted October 11, 2020 Share Posted October 11, 2020 Hello everyone, we are suffering a spectacular run of 76F days so Ursula and I set off on another run to a specialist rubber/ foam supply shop as she is re-doing the seal on the canopy of her Toyota Hilux, very handy girl, my wife! Of course, I suggested taking the Buick and of course that meant taking leafy back roads where-ever possible. Not too many car enthusiast out today surprising given the weather, we did see two red mid-70s Corvettes, an '84 Corvette a rather sad looking '64 Impala and couple of mid 70s Holden Monaros. We stopped on the way home at a fish and chip shop located on the shore of Tuggerah Lake. We had been there may years ago when it actually was a restaurant, sadly it's hey-day passed some time ago although it was still nice to sit by the water and watch the Pelicans, and fisherman catching sea-weed.... It was a 70 mile round trip of sorts and the Buick ran as well as ever. Hope you all had great weekends out driving your Buicks, looking forward to seeing photos! The car was last used in February this year just before the pandemic hit hard. I occasionally start the car but at last driven today to photo shoot my daughter’s civil wedding to be celebrated today with close family and friends at my son’s home. Don’t have to drive it far since his house is two houses away from mine. My daughter cancelled the wedding party Due to COVID but postponed for May next year and still insist to ride the car then. It was this time of year where Dad and I would pack up for a few days and head into the catskills, following back roads and turn off's looking for old farm dumps to dig bottles. But out here, west of San Antonio we get fall colors. Not in October but towards the end of the month and November its beautiful. But not like the Catskills but you do with what you have.
