packard lover
A number of years ago I purchased a 1964 Avanti R2, or so I was told. The frame has the number R4850 and I have started a body off restoration. A few years ago, I bought another Avanti frame which has the number 63R-2126. Would someone confirm the year of the first frame and whether it is an R2? Is there any way to determine if the second frame is for an R1 or R2? Thanks. studeq
Copies of the original production orders are available from the Studebaker National Museum Archives. They will tell you when the car was assembled, colors, all options and accessories etc. See:https://studebakermuseum.org/store/production-orders/ for ordering information.I can tell you that R4850 was originally sold thru Steenerson Motor Co. in Minneapolis (see image below) in March 1964. studeq
Oh, as to the model year of R4850 it is generally agreed that cars with the square headlights were '64 models. However Studebaker advised dealers that all new and unsold Avantis in dealer stock on Sept 1, 1963 and sold at retail after that date would be considered as 1964 models. So there are some round headlight Avantis out there that may be titled as 1964 model year. You should also be aware that there are more Avanti "experts" out there than there are Avanti cars. By the way this forum is principally set up for pre WWII Studebakers. There are separate forums for the Avanti and the Studebaker Drivers Club where the real "experts" hang out.
