drtidmore
From time to time I have found E041 (cam sensor) sitting in ECM History, but never in Current nor had it ever tripped the check engine light or the CRT warning screen. I also have an intermittent E043 (knock sensor) and that code tends to set the Check Engine light and the CRT warning but also self clears after the engine warms up. I suspect the knock sensor but it could be a connection issue as well. There also seemed to be some linkage between finding E043 Current and E041 History, but is was tenuous at best. Last night, E041 (cam sensor) set and remained in Current for the duration of the journey home (i.e. tripped the Check Engine Light and CRT warning screen). When I got home, I killed the engine and restarted it and it still was setting the E041 in Current (FYI, no E043 code in Current or History). This morning, went out started car and E041 was no longer setting a condition in Current. So, I am curious what those that have dealt with the E041 (cam sensor) magnet and sensor issue think? Since the E041 code is intermittent that seems to minimize the odds of it being the cam sensor magnet (interrupter). The engine starts instantly and runs flawlessly at any RPM or load, so I don't think this is an ECM issue. I might add that I did replace the ICM several months ago (leaking green goo) and I don't believe the E041 was setting prior to that point, but E043 would pop up on occasion prior to the new ICM. Granted, this could be an issue with the connections at the ICM as the cam sensor runs thru the ICM circuitry before being passed onto the ECM. If this sounds like the cam sensor magnet (interrupter) then I will tackle that repair, but curious if anyone has seen these symptoms and found another cause. Guest Mc_Reatta
It's not that difficult to get a look at the interrupter. An inspection mirror and a good light makes it pretty easy. Hardest part is to get the interrupter lined up with the access hole. You can turn the engine by the harmonic balancer nut or bouncing the starter. To get more room to work you can remove the serpentine belt and water pump pulley. The magnets can pick up debris that weakens the field or can get dislodged. Nothing beats an eyes on look.Finding an intermittent in the wiring or connectors is much less a sure thing and less probable. There is also a chance that the replacement ICM is defective too, but ruling out the interrupter, which is the most likely source, is the logical first step. harry yarnell
I suspect the cam magnet has some metallic debris on it, OR it is in the early stages of disintegrating. Take a look.
