I have a chrysler roadster that I am trying to get running and have need of a head that will fit the motor, but first I have to identify what motor I have. I think it is a 1927 L 70, but the registration says it is a 1928 roadster.

I can use all the help I can get, Thanks, Dennis

The number you show in second photo is the casting number. The engine serial number is located on a machined pad on the front left side of the engine above the valve cover. See photo.

Many cars were titled the first year they were sold, so if a 1927 was first sold in early 1928 it could have been registered as a 28.

This motor may have the number stamped on the timing chain cover on the right side between the water pump and generator. The beginning letter will tell the Model. I do not see the machined area above the front water jacket cover on the left side of the block.

It appears to be an Imperial the series 80 . If you could check the wheel base they made 3 different for just the Imperials.

The car itself looks to be a 1928 Imperial 80 with those headlamps and bumper. It also looks like the front bumper is upside down. What body style is it? Can you post a photo of the FEDCO plate on the dashboard? That series of letters and numbers tells a LOT. The pate should be similar to these...

post-66848-143142420794_thumb.jpgI want to thank everyone out there for all the help in identifying this car. I was told that it was a 1927 roadster, and that was all, so I have been trying to find a redhead to replace a broken head but I was looking for one for an L-70. I am still looking but think I might have a lead on one.

i couldn't find a fedco plate on the dash or door post, it is a Locke body.

I wish this were my car, but I am working on it for a friend. I will post a few pictures. Again my thanks to all of you.

post-66848-143142424899_thumb.jpgI took a picture of the body plate, it says Locke & company New York, so I am still wondering if I know what car I have. Thanks

In one of his columns in the fifties, Tom McCahill told how he made some fast money one summer selling Tropical Tanning Oil in partnership with Olympic swimmer Johnny Weismuller. He took some of his profits and bought a new Chrysler Imperial 80 roadster with a Locke body. He must have liked the car, he remembered it fondly and some of the trips he took in it, including driving from New York to Palm Beach and back.

He said the tanning lotion was made of oil and iodine, and would turn you brown if you spent the summer in a mushroom cellar. They got a few threats but no lawsuits, and at the end of the summer quit while they were ahead.

Hi, I was wondering if you have had a chance to look at the 80L head, and if you would consider selling it?

Is it a redhead? They made three heads for this engine, the black head, silver dome, and red head, each with a little more compression. The one that I have is a red head, but I am looking for anything that will fit so I can get this car back in operation, then I can keep searching for the right one.

Thanks for all the help identifying this car and engine, Dennis
