A nice set of '39-40 side mount fenders

I just came back from a road trip through Iowa and Kansas to pick up a truck with a friend. On our way back we stopped in a little country junkyard in Kansas, the type that used to be abundant before scrap prices and EPA bureaucrats forced most into extinction. It's a small yard but there's a '39-40 Buick there that is mostly stripped but it has a very decent set of side mount front fenders with the hardware, no covers. If I would have had the time and tools, I would have pulled them and offered them for sale.

The owner seemed like a decent guy and seemed to be realistic about prices.

Here's their web site:

1939 Special and Century had a one year side mount style. The tire cover did not fit into the well, but over the outside of the fender. Someone with a parts book could tell us if the fenders are the same as any other year. 40 had the headlight in the fender so 39 and 40 would not be the same but there is a chance that 38 and 39 are the same. the attached photo shows the tire cover over the fender, not into the well

The headlight was mounted on top of the fender. The owner at first told me he had a '37-38 Buick in the back, when I saw it I knew it wasn't a '37-38. My knowledge of anything before or after '37-38 is very limited. Both fenders had the side mount pockets with the hardware.

1939 and 1940 Special and Century fenders were totally different. Sidemounts on a 1939 Special and Century were totally different than on the Roadmaster and Limited. And too, the Century fenders were longer than he Special fenders, and the sidemount covers on a Century were designed for 15-inch tires rather than the 16-inch tires on a Special. 1938 front fenders are totally different from 1939. The 1939 sidemounts on the Special and Century had the covers fitting outside of the fenders. A good body man could probably section a Century fender to fit a Special, but I doubt he could do it vice versa.

The best thing to do, if anyone is interested in the car I looked at in the yard, is call the yard. I didn't take notice too much about the car because I'm interested in parts related to my '37 Special. I wish I had taken pictures but I didn't think of do it.
