38 Chevy Pickup tailgate question

Recommended Posts

Are the tailgates on a 1/2 ton 1938 Chevy pickup plain flat steel

or are they debossed the the name CHEVROLET on them?

Thanks in advance for the help.

Dave

I could be wrong, but what I have found is they were flat thru 1938, but lettered in 1939. Same size so some people use the 39 on the older trucks because they like the looks of the lettering.

I appreciate the responses. My 38 has a flat tailgate and I have seen early pickups with

Chevrolet on them, so I was not sure when they started.

Any chance that someone has a photo of a 1838 tailgate?

Regards, Dave Gray

This is from oldchevytrucks.com

Item Number: SM117

Retail: $205.00 EACH

This is the correct non lettered tailgate as used by Chevrolet during 1934-38....Formed steel with right angle ends. Ready for final sanding and painting. These quality tailgates are made to original specifications. For those wanting the Chevrolet rolling lettering please order part SM321 which was used only in 1939. Both gates are the same dimensions. This also perfectly fits a GMC however originally this used the stamped oval insignia, SM319... Sold each...Made in USA 46-1/2" LONG
