Pete Phillips
Does anyone here have experience in rechroming the Kelsey-Hayes wire wheels on 1953 Skylarks? I have just come into possession of two very rusty ones and am wondering how difficult it is to get them replated, and if it is even worthwhile. I presume they have to be completely disassembled in order to be replated, and that alone is a daunting task with these. Caballero2
I had five of them done by Dayton wheel. They came out well. Some more attention could have been given to the valve stem hole. The knock-offs were replated by others. Deep pockets or recent inheritance are required. - Dan Edited January 24, 2014 by Caballero2 (see edit history)
Restorer32
We had 5 Skylark wheels plated maybe 10 years ago. We plated the rims and centers and mounted new polished stainless spokes. Cost about $1000 each wheel for the plating and spokes but they were close to perfect. We considered using the available repro wheels but they differ somewhat from the originals in the center. alsancle
Unless you are putting them on a show car or restoring a very nice one you will find it doesn't make sense.
Pete Phillips
Okay, I guess I will not get them replated. If anybody wants these two for $20 apiece plus the cost of postage, let me know. I don't own a '53 Skylark and don't think I ever will.Pete Phillips, BCA #7338Leonard, Texas Edited January 24, 2014 by Pete Phillips (see edit history)
MrEarl
Man those are about the rustiest I have ever seen. I'd gladly give the $20 just to hang on my barn wall, but they'll run about $25-30 each to ship, so will pass. Would look good hangin on you brick shop wall Pete. seriously
Restorer32
Don't even ask what it cost to show chrome a pair of '54 Skylark diecast taillight housings. Well, ok, since you asked.....$2000.
alsancle
We sold a usable set of 4 (not show at all) for I forget how much, but when the guy showed up to get them, he saw we had a couple like those pictured here. We just threw them into the deal no cost.
Pete Phillips
I believe these two are now spoken for by a BCA member. Thanks to all for the comments.Pete
