72gs455
I opened up another block to see what I could harvest and this is what I found. Is this normal? I doubt it was a swap, but who knows...Block stamped V8461335Cam has groove in front of center journal, I can see a casting number on there that reads...1HGM452B39One of my other 50 series block has cam with no groove, I can't read the casting number because it looks like there is an X over it. It's block number is V5229585Any thoughts? Thanks,Jerry
1953mack
No. More like two different year Buick 50 Series engines with two different correct camshafts. Your first Engine Serial Number V8461335 should be on a 1955 Buick Series 50 engine. Your second E.S.N V5229585 should be on a 1954 Buick Series 50 engine. 72gs455
But doesn't the groove next to the center journal mean it is for a 40 series? Edited January 18, 2014 by 72gs455 Pic added (see edit history)
old-tank
But doesn't the groove next to the center journal mean it is for a 40 series? You are correct about the groove, and the service manual says the 264 cam is not interchangeable with the 322. But in practice they probably could be. It may be a factory mistake or later change out. Current replacement cams for 264 and 322 are the same part number (Egge). I never could find the cam specs for the 55 cams to see what the differences are.Willie
72gs455
Thanks Willie! I was hoping you would have an answer... But was there a 264 that would have been in a 50 series?

Bhigdog
No pix in a 55 manual. Simply text that says 264 has one groove, 322 no groove and not interchangeable..............Bob
72gs455
Thanks, I just don't know why it would be in a block stamped V8461335

Check out the applications for a 1955 camshaft with two grooves.Al Malachowski BCA #8965 "500 Miles West of Flint" Edited January 19, 2014 by 1953mack (see edit history)
Bhigdog
Good catch. When I quoted the 55 shop manual it didn't seem correct. I've seen that scan before, probably a service bulletin. I do remember now checking that my 1955 60 series camshaft did have 2 grooves.............Bob
