Hershey was NOT a washout!

Lots of rain this year at Hershey. I drove in Wed around noon and weather was good. By

Thursday noon it was bad, so drove back 5 hours to Ohio and glad I did, because

I heard later Thursday afternoon was bad and Friday the same. Looking forward to

next year. But even in spite of the rain, from what I could see, the attendance

was down Tues, Wed & Thursday anyhow. Maybe the Internet is doing a number

on the shows? Carlisle Fall was dead too as near as I could tell. I hope the

judging goes OK Saturday.

Wednesday was actually a good day, good number of people walking and car corral with lots of cars....

Thursday morning good too, Thursday at 2pm rain started and never stopped.

A good flea market experience if you were there mid-week, if you showed up Friday it was few and far between on vendors....due to weather......I found some neat things Wednesday....

I arrived Weds night and was on the field by 9 am. It was raining off and on most of the day, but there were some decent dry times to get in some shopping. Unfortunately, only about 25-30% of the vendors were open, so a lot of time was wasted running from spot to spot. Rain came in heavy around 3 pm, but we stayed in the car coral until 5 or so.

I had intentions of hanging out through Friday, but as I left the parking area, I could see the grass starting to turn to mud. I can only imagine what it is like in those two parking areas today. I have watched the radar on my smart phone continuously and it has never let up. I'm hoping that someone will post pictures of the parking areas just for my own info.

Sad - we wait for Hershey all year and this happens. Pretty much the only place in the country that the rain hit. I did get some nice things, so it wasn't a total "washout" for me.

I am still at Hershey. Most vendors closed today and many were leaving. I did not walk the flea market, but went in to my space to pick up something. Took the wife shopping and there were some roads in the Hershey area closed because of flooding! Will try to go to the show tomorrow!

Weather was beautiful!! Yes, there were quite a few no-shows not enough to ruin it totally. I would guess 250-300 vehicles. It was very nice overall.

As to the gent on the other thread who is quite pessimistic and negative about many things we do I did not see any mud, grass, etc., on vehicles. He probably does not believe it that the old golf course drains quickly but it did. Crowds were also very good.

Wife an I left a day early because of all the rain. First time in ten years we missed the car show. We'll be back again next year.

The weather was beautiful today, the field did drain and dry, I DID see many vehicles with mud on them(also some of it could have been from where unloaded), not severe, but still, something you shouldn't have to be cleaning off at a national meet. The field of cars was sparse in comparison to a regular year, but many beautiful cars to be seen. I commend those that brought their cars out and roll my eyes at those that left theirs in the trailers.

I pulled in to Hershey Wednesday around 4:00. Had a great afternoon and went to the "Night at the Museum". I was back on the field market at 7:00am and made some very good purchases. By Thursday 5:00 my knees were ready for a break and the rain was causing many of the vendors to close up shop. So, stopped ny a pharmacy for alieve and bengay.

Stopped at the buffet at the casino and then called it a night. Friday, I managed to pick up some more parts I had passed on Thursday and was able to catch the vendors before they packed up.

Was nice catching up with Brian DePouli and met some other great Buick people in the BCA tent.

Left somewhere around 11:00 and headed home. Only missed walking the orange field with the lack of vendors.

All in all, had a good time at Hershey and will return bext year again! Matt

As stated above, Wednesday was a nice day with many vendors open and doing business. Thursday and Friday, not so much. (Especially Friday)

I expected a muddy mess on the show field today, but after the judges breakfast I walked over to the Show field to an unexpected surprise. It was business as

usual with the exception of many no shows. The weatherman scared some participants off, but the ones that did show up and the spectators had an amazing day. By noon it was shirtsleeves and sunglasses. As usual all of the volunteers and judges did a great job. In summary, today turned out to be a far better day than most of us had expected.

We pulled in around 11:30 Tuesday and setup. Had the best sales year I can remember. Even Thursday business was good. We packed up Friday morning after the down pour all night and the prediction for the day. Only the second time in over 40 years we pulled out early. Last time was the year of the great Hershey lake in the old Blue field (around 1975). Of course that year we left on Saturday afternoon instead of Sunday morning and it was the worst sales year ever, we were not open at all and sold nothing, but we were on high ground at least.

We did a quick run-thru of the car show field before leaving yesterday morning (glorious weather), and saw many cool cars and some familiar faces.

Great job as usual Hershey Region--already looking forward to next year...

Call it, "Hershey Lite." Some friends were here all week and were told by vendors that they had great sales on both Tues. setup and Wed. I got here Thursday noonish and by 3PM had done the Red Field, then ditched the rain and visited the Library. Great to see the place full of folks keeping the staff hopping with research requests, scanning and copying. Took a CJE on Friday and went back to the hotel. With many empty vendor spaces and nothing critical to find, it didn't make much sense to just traipse around in inclement weather. On the bright side, the rain was almost constant but not cold, and strong winds Friday night really helped the show field.

Show Day was a whole other story...almost a perfect, partly cloudy day for a show. Just one car in my judging class had any noticeable mud, and that was only on the exhaust pipe. Half of the 200 registered HPOF cars showed up, and that ratio seemed indicative overall. Had to be at least 600+ vehicles in attendance.

With many no-shows everywhere (Flea Market, Car Show, etc.), the traffic was lighter and it made for the most stress-free Hershey I've ever attended. It would be interesting to see if the Museum and Library visitor tallies were positively affected as people got out of the weather. I wouldn't want a repeat anytime soon (missed seeing a lot of friends and vendors), but this week will be just another to add to the Hershey legend.

Our museum and library had record attendance. They were the beneficiary of the bad weather.

Most vendors I talked to had a great day on Tuesday! Yes, it is set up day but it is quickly becoming a very important day for vendors. National has decided to open up on Tuesday next year as well. Interesting some vendors had a good day on Thursday and Friday. One vendor with a tent near our trailer had an incredible day on Thursday in the downpour. I am sure some did terrible which is a shame.

The show field did extremely well. There were very few areas of any mud. Most of the participants gave the field a high five for its condition and some said their mud came from unloading and not from the field. Considering 9.74 inches of rain in two days we were very fortunate.

Hershey still is Mecca and our team besides being tired are here on Sunday handling the "left-overs" from the fall meet and discussing our plans for next year!

Had it on my hat, which I wore while flea market & car corral browsing, Wednesday through Friday--and even a quick bit of car show spectating on Saturday morning. Guess they don't make them waterproof!

Bummed about the weather, got very wet sitting by the cars in the car corral. That was A LOT of rain. Wow!

Sadly, during the heavy rains on Thursday night or Friday morning, somehow the engine in my beloved Audi allroad daily driver filled with water. Got in Friday morning, started it, turned around in the parking lot and drove about 30 feet before it stopped dead. Had it towed to a local shop where they found water in the intake, turbos, intercoolers, and cylinder #6, which also had a broken connecting rod. Engine is toast, insurance company will likely total the car. I rented a car and drove home, leaving it behind, probably forever. I'm very, very unhappy. I also liked not having a car payment, and that allroad was still a very nice car that I expected to use for many years. A perfect capper on a dreary week. Don't know how it happened, but that's about how the whole week went for me.

Next year HAS to be better!

I have to echo what Steve said about Thursday. We took a large load of ANTIQUE CAR and TRUCK PARTS and expected a great week. Wednesday was better than usual, and I think some buyers arrived a day early to beat the rain drops. Thursday was a wild day, as we had buyers every time the rain started. Each time the rain stopped, so did the buying. By the end of the day, we had sold more parts than almost any day I can remember. On Friday morning, we set out the stuff that rain wouldn't hurt and hoped for the best. Of course, by early afternoon even the most hearty of souls had found a dry spot and activity ceased. We thought a dry Saturday might spark a non-typical Saturday buying spree; but of course the Friday afternoon exodus of sellers had reduced the swap meet field to about 10%. When I read about the "decline" of the Hershey swap meet experience- I don't know who should shoulder the "blame". The "cure" is for more sellers to stick it out under less than perfect conditions and more buyers to take advantage of those Saturday morning deals. We remain in awe of the effort the Hershey Region makes each year under trying conditions; and we'll keep plugging away until the last sore-footed soul leaves for home. Bring on 2014.

I can't blame any vendor for packing it in on Saturday, even vendors under tents risked their wares being damaged. I was in a couple literature places and saw people laying their umbrella's on the boxes beside the ones they were looking through - under tent yes, immune from damage no.

I arrived early Tuesday morning, and had a good day selling and shopping. Both Tuesday and Wednesday were excellent days for shopping and enjoying the wonderful weather, and meeting old friends.

Thursday norning had a bit of drizzle and light rain, but Thursday afternoon it rained. But by previous years standards, it wasn't too bad. There was very little wind, the temperatures were quite pleasant and there was NO MUD!! Hershey MUD is legendary, and I certainly don't miss it.

I think with the fully paved swap meet fields, many shoppers seemed to forget that rain itself is a challenge. I forgot to bring good waterproof boots, and waded around in sneakers. l have not bothered with waterproof boots over the last few years, because I really wore them for the MUD not thinking about the water.

I think the biggest the number of vendors closing up and leaving and the number of shoppers that didn't bother staying is an indication of us being spoiled by many years of relatively nice weather. Maybe next year many will come better prepared for adverse weather.

I stayed and shopped all day Friday, and did well, it was a shame that so many vendors left early.

I was SURE that the show field would be a mess, but I was wrong, just a few places where both vehicle and foot traffic had kneaded the wet ground into mud.. but the field was in surprisingly good condition. The biggest problem with the show was the number of no-show cars.. lots of empty spaces. I only stayed for about an hour or so, then got on the road for my 9 hour drive home.

As always, I really enjoyed the swap meet and bought plenty.

Looking forward to next year.

Headed to Carlisle Thursday morning. Got into rain and by the time I reached Harrisonburg, VA it was raining hard and very foggy, making driving visibility extremely bad. Stopped at Gander Mountain and bought a rain suit. Good investment. Visibility still bad Friday morning. Got to Hershey, parked in the handicapped lot and got the tag for my scooter. Decided on account of the rain to leave the scooter and my camera in the car and try to get around in the car corral with my walker. A gentleman from NJ took me and the walker to the corral in his pickup. I traveled the whole length of the car corral by walking a while, sitting a while, and then walking some more. By the time I reached the end of the corral my legs were just about useless. A nice young man named Troy returned me to the handicapped lot with his golf cart and I headed to the Museum. Parking was scarce. I left the walker in the van and walked to the museum. Not a real good decision but was able to rest every few minutes in the museum because they do have benches and chairs in conveinient locations. Enoyed a visit with a nice family from Ireland. Elderly grandfather, his middle-aged son and teen-aged grandson. The father told me his father comes to Hershey every year. Got up Saturday and actually spotted some sunshine. Back to Hershey. Unloaded the scooter, loaded the camera and some necessities into the scooter and traveled thru the corral over to the show field. Had promised to tour the show with a high school senior from NYC who joined AACA about 15 months ago. Met him and his mom and had a very enjoyable 3 hours with them. Was surprised at the good condition of the show field. People were very polite. Got to talk with several car owners. The combination of nice weather, nice cars and very nice people made a very enjoyable day. Left Hershey maybe 5 minutes before six, drove 320+ miles, and reached home a few minutes after 11:00. My legs have been miserable today but I've known for a long time that after you dance you have to pay the fiddler and believe me, I have paid the fiddler today. Thanks to hydrocone I think I'll live and might even do it again next year even tho' at 74 I have to remind myself that I'm getting too old to play the game. Thanks again to Koby and his mom for spending the day with me.

My son and I didn't arrive until Friday around noon, but we spent 5+ hours in mostly downpours Fri afternoon, searching for parts. We have an RV, and were prepared with the rain gear and umbrellas, and didn't get soaked. Tip for Hershey, buy a good rain suit and you'll be fine if it's ever wet It was sad to see many of the vendors packing up, especially after driving 5 hours. However, there were many that were prepared with tents and such and stayed open. My son and I thanked the ones we visited. Only my second time at Hershey, but plenty of times in Carlisle. On Friday, it was our best day of buying parts ever! We got some great stuff, including a Cadillac fender, vent window, lights, etc.., mainly from a vendor called Annapolis?? We lugged it all back on a cart to our RV at around 6pm. It was a great day! We had a list of parts we needed and got 90% of them, spending around $1000 Fri. There was a re-chroming tent still open and planning on sending all of my bumpers/end for my next project to them. Bought some general supplies/tools from other vendors as a show of support. We even scored some parts Saturday evening, around 3:30-4PM from a vendor call Bill Faull??, Glad that he stuck it out as I found some dash parts and brake light, and planning on getting more from him as they just got another parts car back at their shop. A huge thanks to the Fri/Sat vendors staying...thank you!!!

Oh, and the show field was awesome on Sat! Can't believe so many people didn't stick around...our Sr car only had a few specks of mud on the tires Surprisingly, I also got a sunburn Sat walking around the show field!

Ted, I hear ya I never wanted to drive 5 hours to Hershey and chance it after my restoration, so agree. I finally bit the bullet 2 years ago and bought an enclosed trailer.

A suggestion! Arrive late Wednesday or early Thursday. If a vendor arrives, he will certainly be open on those days, regardless of weather.

This brings up another, if off-topic question: Even when I have attended Hershey on Thursday, by 2:00-3:00 in the afternoon many of the vendors are closing up for the day. It's frustrating since I only have one day to attend. Has the hobby aged that much that there's a rush to hit the early bird special for dinner?

I see the same thing at Carlisle. I'm a vendor at Fall Carlisle and again many vendors start closing shop by 3:00 in the afternoon. Worse is the exodus on Saturday (Carlisle is supposed to be open through Sunday). I was surprised this year to see major commercial vendors closed and out the gate shortly after noon on Saturday. Kinda hard to spend money when they aren't there. I guess the economy must be getting better after all...

Joe, since you can't force vendors to stay, maybe some sort of incentive program would work. If you are there Saturday afternoon, you'll get first priority on spots for the vendor area the next year, or discount on the spaces. i.e., if you are way in the back and stay until Sat 4pm, next year you can move to the area by the Giant center first, right up front and take the place of the early departing vendors Not sure of the logistics as I'm new to Hershey (2 times), but an incentive program would be great!

We arrived in the Hershey area on Sunday as usual. We have switched to a newer, better campground in the Fort Indiantown area. Very pleased with that. Better campground for less money. Trade-off was about fifteen minutes extra time to get there. Well worth the extra time.

Wednesday Bill, Rodger (the friend that also judges and stays with us at AACA Meets) and I headed into the flea market and had a very pleasant day. Bill and Rodger went into the flea market areas on Thursday but I didn't go. I had had a sinus infection earlier the week before and was just beginning to feel better and didn't want to risk getting sick again so I stayed at the camper. None of us went into the flea market fields on Friday. We went out into the surrounding areas to see the sights. As well as going to the AACA Museum. Bill and I didn't realize that Rodger had never been to it. He was very impressed and pleased with his visit to it. Being able to visit "for free" with our membership cards is a very nice perk of being a member.

I guess we will have to start heading into the flea market fields on Tuesday if we hope to find any parts. We haven't found anything for any of our three antique vehicles for quite a few years. And it seems that those that do....went on Tuesday. I think they need to make opening day Tuesday official, or to be fair to all, keep it closed until Wednesday and then let everyone have an equal chance. We had heard an announcement that it didn't open until Wednesday and it sounded by the person's voice inflection that they meant "open WEDNESDAY" as if to discourage early bird shoppers which is what has gone on for years.

As Peter J. Heizmann stated the show field is an old golf course and those are built to drain quickly. And it did. The rain stopped in about late afternoon Friday and the breeze blew and the surface was actually pretty dry by the time the vehicles entered the field. Had the rain continued through Friday and into Saturday it might have been a different story. But we lucked out. Sadly there were a number of no shows but it is always up to the owners as to what to do.

Hope for better weather next year. Was happy to see and visit with folks like Fran Shore, Joe Vacini, Dave and Karen Berg (Karen was my Team Captain), Pat Thorpe and his dad, David Devine, Rick Marsh, Marty Roth, Wayne Burgess, Steve Moskowitz and others.

Hershey is always great! Yes, even in the rain. You've got to remember 1976 and compare everything with that one and you'll realize nothing will ever compare with the "mudbowl" that we had that year. I have always said the blacktop now gives us two things we never had before. I'm hearing complaints about sore feet from walking on a hard surface, and someone observed that it also allows for quick and easy escape for vendors who otherwise would be "trapped" in a muddy field. I can't blame folks for covering and even fleeing from such a deluge though. I saw some some seriously valuable early literature damaged by the water, as well as car parts that are potentially ruined by the rain. I even covered my stuff! But, as a shopper, it was a wonderful Hershey. Sure we had to walk further, but if you didn't mind getting wet feet or having to work a little harder, you would find the stuff. I ducked into several tents and found nice things. Even on Saturday we managed to find some parts that I never thought it would be possible to find - Susan snagged three front shocks for her MGTC, and anyone playing with those cars knows how hrd to find they can be. Heck, the rebuilders won't even sell them outright - they will only rebuild your cores! We also found something else unbelievable while walking over to the showfield Saturday morning after the judges breakfast - a mascot for the 1948 MGTC! I was thrilled with the nice brass headlamp purchased for my collection, and have a bag full of trinkets that I'm going to spend time with this evening. So I managed to suffer through with a smile and thoroughly enjoyed seeing old friends again, searching for treasure and even the rain. It's the stuff great stories are made of. In fact Saturday I had a nice visit with some Hershey Region folks and we all agreed there should be a periodic column in Antique Automobile Magazine called "tales from Hershey." My calendar is already blocked for next year and I plan everything else around it and budget my annual time-off accordingly. Oh, and the crab cakes were great again this year too!

Hershey in the rain is still better than being anywhere else in the world. Not meaning to offend anyone, but could it be that some of the vendors and car owners who bug out early - rain or no - are "professionals" simply there for the money, not because they love cars or enjoy talking to people about car stuff? I've only been attending Hershey for the last 10 years but I somehow envision that in earlier times - when there was rain, mud and everything else that gets thrown at Hershey - things were more laid back and if it poured like it did this year, everyone simply found a dry place to sit and visit with one another. There wasn't the rush to make sales, if it rained and you sold something, great; if you didn't, it wasn't a big deal because you spent 3 hours talking cars with whomever passed by and had a good time.

We set up on Tuesday and had really good sales on Tuesday and Wednesday. Found some Model A parts and a few good spark plugs. The Thursday rain put a damper on sales but at least the weather cleared for the car show.

Ted, I hear ya I never wanted to drive 5 hours to Hershey and chance it after my restoration, so agree. I finally bit the bullet 2 years ago and bought an enclosed trailer.

unfornately i have no place to store a trailer nor a 3/4ton truck to pull it with.
