Cowtown Commander
Have engine back in the 1938 Commander Coupe and will be getting new battery, what do I need to do. Obviously the positive goes to the frame, but how do I charge the new battery? To which terminal do I put the red (positive lead)? Thanks
ply33
Positive lead on the charger goes to the positive side of the battery. If the car is positive ground then any part of the chassis is connected to the positive terminal of the battery and you can clip the red lead to the chassis.I have to mentally double check every time when I attach a charger to my old car as it is so natural to do it backwards if I don't slow down to think about it. Dwight Romberger
For extra "memory" insurance, I put a red terminal cap and red battery cable from positive battery terminal to ground on my positive ground cars.I found it was too easy to see the original bare, braided ground wire and automatically hook up the neg charger cable clip. nvonada
Sorry if this is too obvious but you want to make sure to use a 6V charger as well. In an EMERGENCY you can jump the car off 12V but a 12V charge would be ugly.
starlightcoupe
Your newly installed battery should a Group 1 and already be fully charged. It's been a while since we had to add electrolyte to new dry batteries. Remember to polarize your regulator.
