72gs455
So I am looking to paint the front suspension and frame on my 54 Super. Anything I should be aware of? I have never dealt with this old of system. Never dealt with anything older than a 68. Any pit falls? Anything I should or shouldn't do?Can I just compress the springs and unbolt it from the frame?Sorry for sounding like a ROOB, but iyam whats iyam!Any help is appreciated! 72gs455
Thanks! I have a manual. I would like to compress the springs and take the entire unit off the frame. Is this possible? The service manual does not really talk about complete removal.
Bhigdog
The big thing is safely removing the springs. Assuming the car is all together do like the book says to remove the springs. After that it's a matter of unbolting whatever needs to be unbolted to remove the control arms from the frame. If you wish to go further the book will tell you how to disassemble the steering/control arm assemblies. If you do that you most likely will need a good impact wrench. If the car is not all together with full weight on the springs it is STRONGLY recommended you buy or rent a stout spring compressor. Either front spring is capable of lifting the front end if there is not full weight on the car. Or taking your head off for that matter.Be thoughtful, be careful, be safe..............Bob

Bhigdog
And that spring looked to be about half the beefyness of a 54 Buick's.............Bob
