problem with harness to computer

My 1989 Reatta has been having issues with the electrical harness to computer. The latest is to the A/C unit. It was fully charged repairman says a wire from harness is faulty. Should the whole harness be replaced. There are other intermittent electronic issues....Chime for key in and lights on does not always work. I also need a LH lens for rear, anyone have a suggestion where to purchase one. Thank you.

I would seriously doubt the need for a full harness. I would look at grounds and power distribution points well before looking towards a harness. Also I would find a second opinion from a different mechanic.

I agree about getting a second opinion. The chime module is a common failure on it's own, and is due to bad internal solder joints within the module in almost all cases.

You didn't identify the specific A/C problem you are having but if it is fully charged and still not working you could have a bad pressure sensor - also a common failure point. These problems could both be extant without any harness issues at all.

Unless someone has hacked up the harness for some reason, the connector was damaged, or mice/squirrels chewed it up, it is unlikely to be a problem.

Rear reflector can be had from parts vendors listed in the Reatta resources thread at the top of the forum thread list.

I have a complete engine harness for an '89 (they're all different) already sitting on tge shelf. and the rear reflector should you need one.

Just wondering if you know how the 88 vs. 89 differ? I am using a 88 select sixty harness in my engine swap (going in an 89) and it would save me some time checking. If not I will post them in the write up.

Daniel,

I know one big difference is that in 88, the VSS reports first to the bcm then bcm resends the data to the ecm on the data line. 89 is exactly the opposite. I found this out with my first 88 by discovering it had an 89 mem-cal.This caused a VSS error to set until I put the right prom in it.

So, be careful mixing harnesses and modules/proms as you may induce unintended errors as there are differences in the routing of some sensor circuits. I'd try to use harness and modules/proms from the same model year to prevent a lot of potential aggravation and unneeded troubleshooting.

Thank you everyone for your input. I am truly a novice. The repairman told me it was a wire that was damaged. I know that the compressor tests okay but does not respond to the signal to turn on. I suppose my language tells you how ignorant I am about my Reatta. I get cross eyed reading the manual. Does anyone know a good Reatta repair man in Southern New Jersey. Thanks

HutHorseman, there is a relay involved in turning the compressor on in the underhood relay center that might be worth checking out if your doubting the diagnosis of a bad wire.

Doesn't sound like your wanting to troubleshoot this problem yourself, but if you have a DVM or test light, we can talk you thru it.

I do have a friend who would more than likely be able to do this. If I can get back to you later I sure would appreciate it. He is busy until Monday....would that be ok

Absolutely. :)

Until then, start here if you can. Use diagnostics to see if there are any stored trouble codes:

I did as instructed and the only code that comes up is B671 - the cruise control.. The mechanic disconnected it. The computer is a wonderful thing if understood. So many codes and no little knowledge on my part. I do have the repair manual. I took that with me to the shop but the mechanic waved it off. It runs like a top but I want it to be as Right as can be. Thanks

That can be the subject of another thread.

Looks like AC pressure switch and temp sensors are OK since no related codes were set.

Next step is to check that power is getting where it should and whether the relay or the ECM is not getting the clutch to activate.

So lets us know when your ready.
