Guest Bob Styles
1928 BUICK VIBRATION HI all, Does anyone out there know of an unusual vibration that appears to emanate from the distributor drive at the rear of the generator on a 1928 standard 6 Buick. The engine has been totally rebuilt and runs very well up to about 1500 RPM at which point a severe vibration occurs rather like a very loose timing chain slapping against a housing although no timing chain exists it being gear driven. The vibration decreases at perhaps 2500 RPM. The vibration and noise is reasonably high frequency. With a stethoscope or sounding rod the noise appeared to come from the above source however upon dismantling the generator and dissy drive the only fault I could locate was some minor wear on the generator shaft boss where it engages the worm drive to the dissy and water pump offtake. All bearings appear perfect and the armature is not contacting the field windings or core. I have considered the vibration as being reflected from some other source but tracing with a stethoscope does not locate any other souce of disagreeable sound etc. I am beginning to wonder if there is a fault with the internal Tortional balancer which is spring mounted and perhaps if a leaf spring is broken the harmonics might reflect up through the drive train and cause severe chatter at the location described. That though seems a little like clutching at straws and I am not keen to strip the motor down if someone else might have had prior experience and know exactly the source of the Problem.. Any input/advise from members would be appreciated. Cheers Bob Styles<!-- google_ad_section_end -->
