FRANKLIN 1928 WOOD WHEELS

This hobby can certainly fry one nerves

I trying to get the 28 12A Victoria (the mistress) ready for the Trek, she has a shimmy at 40 mph, everything seem tight and right in the front end. Tires

were new a long time ago, mounted, and never driver on. Jacking up the front of the car, I spin the wheel with a fixed reference point set

just were the whitewall starts and I can see about a 1/2" variation in the shape of the tire, the rim spins almost true. I have the same result on

the other side of the car. So I came up with the theory that the tires have a distortion from sitting for 35 years with low air pressure,

never being driven on and maybe its not a good idea to drive 100's of miles with 35 year old tires. Not a problem, the half restored 28 12A sedan (the wife; who

has already given up many parts to her better looking stable mate) has a set of the exact same tires (Lester 6.00/6.50-20) on her wood rims (also never been driven on,

but mounted last year). Just swap the tires & demountable rims and see if the problem goes away----

So why would Franklin use two different (but very similar) wood wheels and demountable rims that are not interchangeable ?

At first glance the wheels look identical, but with careful inspection you can tell they are made by different suppliers, the Franklin parts catalog

shows the same part being used for all series 12-5's. Changing tires on these rims ----- I would rather have a root canal
