There is an automatic spring loaded belt tensioner, and it may be worn if the belt is not maintaining proper tautness. If you have the original factory tensioner, it has a mark on it's face to show if it is within proper range based on how far it is rotated. If it is shot, the arrow that points to the mark on it's face will be outside the acceptable range (or at least very close to being so). Only solution to this is to replace the tensioner pulley assembly.

The security light will blink for a short time after the car is parked and turned off if the doors are not locked. If the doors ARE locked, it will light solid (no blinking) for a short time to show that the system is armed. If yours is not going solid when the doors are locked, then the most likely culprit is a bad door jamb switch (one on each door at the front of the opening, has a black plastic plunger covered by a black rubber "accordion boot" to seal out dust and moisture.

Might need to know what year you have as there were differences in the system year to year.

Operation of jamb and other door switches can be confirmed by using diagnostics.

  • 11 months later...

My 'vert just started with the security light flashing tonight. What input codes do I read? B103, B104, B105, B106?

According to it is the door jamb switch. I will bet it is the drivers door as the passenger door has not been used recently.

Sorry Ronnie. I glanced at it quickly and thought it was for resurrecting "The Show".

I did run the tests and passed with flying colors. Then swapped out the 'vert's door jamb switch with the passenger side switch from the Red.

Still flashes, any other ideas? Should I swap the 'vert's passenger side switch with the Red?

BTW the original IPC has a burned out amber "Security " light. The other 3 that I tested all flashed. Will I get a battery drain on a bulb that doesn't work?

The door jamb switch wires tie in with wires from a tamper switch located in each door before going to the theft deterrent module. They are all spliced together under the RH seat according to the '89 FSM. Check your '90 manual to make sure it is the same. The circuit that connect it all together are light blue wires. If that light blue wire goes to ground I believe the security light will flash as if a door was open.

If your security light flashes all the time. Here is how I would go about troubleshooting it. Someone might be able to offer and easier way.

1. First rule out a bad theft deterrent module by replacing with a known good one if you have it.

2. Rule out the keyless entry module by replacing with a known good one if you have it.

3. Check door switches.

Remove both door jam switches and disconnect them.

Did the security light stop flashing? ---Yes... bad door jamb switch.

No... pull the door panels and disconnect the tamper switches on the door locks.

Did the security light stop flashing? ---Yes... bad tamper switch.

No... check for a pinched, cut or broken light blue wire going to ground inside the door or inside the jamb.

Did the security light stop flashing when you moved the wires around? ---Yes... repair light blue wire where it is going to ground.

No... check light blue wire splice under the seat. You could find anything here. You are looking for a short to ground in the light blue wire somewhere between the switches. the splice and the theft deterrent module. If you don't see anything wrong with the splice you might have to take it apart, separate the wires and check each one for going to ground somewhere between there and one of the switches or the module.

Thanks for all your help Ronnie!

Because it is a convertible we leave the top down even when we park it somewhere so the "Security" isn't that important, so unless I have another reason, I don't want to go inside the doors, or under the carpet, or behind any panels. Because the IPC that came with the car has a burned out "Security" bulb, I will leave that in. I will disconnect the door jamb switches and try that [using an IPC witha working "Security" light]. If that fixes it then great, but what is confusing to me is that the BCM inputs are telling me all my switches work. I even tried cleaning the pellets on the keys and that didn't do it either.

Dave, according to the FSM there are two sets of contacts inside the door jamb switch. One set of contacts is for the theft deterrent system. That is the circuit with the light blue wire I was referring to in my previous post.

There is another set of contacts in the door jamb switch that are connected to the BCM by a white wire that tells the BCM when to activate the interior light relay. The door switch test on ROJ is is only testing the circuit that goes to the BCM. That is the reason I asked in my first post if the interior lights were working.

Sorry for the confusion. Sounds like you have a good plan for making it work for you. It is a lot less work than what I was proposing.

So I get in the Red today, close the door and no "Show". Got out of the car opened and closed the passenger door [where I had put the door jamb switch from the 'vert] and opened the drivers door of the Red got in closed the door and got "The Show". I believe I am on the right track and that both door jamb switches are intermittantly failing.

I will keep working on it and report back with what happens.
