padgett
I have seen a sticky TCC solenoid before that prevents lockup. Ususally application of SeaFoam corrects but one is being stubborn. Can you get to the TCC solenoid/shuttle with the transmission in the car ?
Guest 89 Maui
padgett -I have a bad TCC solenoid in my transmission and found out that the end plate of the tranny has to be removed to get to the solenoid. But there is not enough room to removed the endplate with the tranny in place. The tranny has to be dropped to remove the endplate and the lowest quote I got was $750 plus the $40 for the TCC solenoid. When I plan on doing repair to the tranny I will change the solenoid at that time since my '89 has been a garage queen. I had found a way to bypass the 026 code by disconnecting the solenoid wires out of the connector and wiring the leads to a 3/8" dia 12V reed relay and buried it in the wiring harness. The ECM thinks it is activating the solenoid in this manner. I just do not have an active TCC while driving on the highway, but it's not worth $750 at this time.Woody
Guest crazytrain2
Padgett,Found this info online, the discussion and pictures are geared mainly for a THM 125C tranny, but the author does cover what additional parts would need to be removed if it were a 440T4. Hope its of some help to you.THM 125C Torque Converter Clutch Solenoid Replacement.
Guest Richard D
My TC does not lock up until I maintain 50 MPH. Could that be reprogramed to 45 MPH? Most of my driving is on US-1 and the speed limit is 45, traffic usually moves at 49-50 MPH. TC locks up then unlocks as soon as I slow to 48 or touch the brake pedal, which is what it is supposed to do, I think.Thank'sRichard.
Guest Corvanti
Richard D: i haven't had the problem of my tranny downshifting after getting to around 47mph until close to stop or hitting the gas pedal to resume speed. almost feels like it's shifted into neutral... since most of my trips are short, i can get it up to where i can tell the tranny is in "overdrive" and back off a bit if needed for a 45 speed limit. this was only noticed after i did a trans fluid dump, new filter, etc. last year after i purchased her and fixed other problems. the t-fluid was brown. check the fluid. the seafoam fix - then a dump, filter and fill may help before you try to reprogram the 'puter. otherwise do what "89Maui" suggests. padgett
Richard: your issue is not that the TCC desn't lock but that the trans doesn't shift into o/d below 50-52 in a 90 (not sure about 89). 88 is the only one that will go into o/d at 46 and then locks immediately. The traans is supposed to lock in third above 40 but I am not sure I have seen that happen. Guest Corvanti
well, since my '89 does lock as i stated at around 47/48 on a flat road... i may need a break from here and other sites - since trying to help folks trying the "easier" fixes first seems to be a problem. Jim
Years ago when I was doing "repairables" I did a really nice '89 Skylark that had been under fresh water. I drained all the fluids a couple of times and replaced all the electronics in the car and replaced all the wiring from a junk yard car. I drove the car myself for a month or two to make sure everything was good and one day I came up to a stop sign at the bottom of a freeway ramp and the car quit. The TCC had locked up the torque converter and killed the engine. Fortunately when restarting the car, the solenoid released. Happened a second time and I then replace the TCC. Sold the car to my neighbor and he drove it trouble free for several years.
