How should I troubleshoot

1989 coupe.

I had a 'new' radio and four new speakers installed a month ago. Since last week, the passenger door speaker gives out about 25% less volume then the other front speaker or when all four are balanced 50/50. Last Sunday, the passenger rear speaker, when turning on the radio, will give a 1/2 second of what sounds like a needle skipping over a record (a scratch). I do not have another radio to replace it with but was wondering where to troubleshoot first. The radio (maybe a bad connection directed towards the passenger side) or the speakers? Anyone have/had a similar problem?

Suggest you get your hearing checked first.

Sounds like bad connection. Pick your poison, get to the radio module, or start inside the door.

No matter where you start, it will be in the other location.

i'd start with speaker wiring problems. sounds like it may be a dirty/loose electrical connection on the right side. did you go with original speakers or others that need a "Metro" or similar adapter?

Bushwack,

I know that with home stereo equipment you can have similar problems. One potential solution is to pull the volume, balance, fader and tuning knobs and clean the between the adjustment legs. Vacuum or a pressurized can of air spray like that which you use on a keyboard is recommended. Just a thought.

Ervin, did they snip off the factory connectors at the speaker ends and solder on new terminals? If so, I'd check those first. (Is why I always do my own stereo work, and like to use proper reverse connectors to plug into stock harnesses. Most car stereo places won't spend the extra $5 for them.)

Also check to see if a wire got accidentally pinched.
