Does anyone know what year Buick switched from the torque ball retainer with a rubber boot to the newer style with the vulcanized rubber lip? Looking at years on parts listings I'm thinking it was most likely 1953 but I would like to know for sure.

1957. Back in the 60's I solved a leak by buying and installing (on my 55) what was described as a 1957 outer torque ball retainer. I used to have a 1958 Flightpitch manual and that type was described there. There have been some described here that had the rubber on the torque ball.

Thanks guys. So '57 seems to be the earliest report of the vulcanized retainer. Just out of curiosity, does anyone know if they're mentioned in the 1957 service manual? Or was the 1958 Flightpitch manual the first to mention it in print?
