I saw this car last night. Looks like a nice car but I got bored reading all the cliche text. There's is very little history or details mentioned about the car, so where's the beef ? I emailed some questions and the seller responded that "he bought it as an investment recently, that the odometer has rolled over so it is really 115,000 miles and that how long he has owned it was irrelevant to it's condition." All I wanted was some background information and so and I guess I got it...

A '65 Gran Sport that was advertised on ebay for $ 53,000.00 apparantly sold as the seller ended the auction as the car was no longer for sale. It was located in a north suburb of Chicago at a collector car dealer so maybe it was sold locally ? These '65s are on the rise once again...

He'll never get anything close to that asking price for a stripped down, no option car.

Very true. But if he even gets half of his asking price he would make a very tidy sum on his "investment" he bought a week and a half ago, lol.

IIRC the previous owner had it since the mid 80's, and bought it from a friend who had owned it for a while. I think he said he was the third owner? Miles were 115k, and he said he had replacement the timing chain, but that was really it as far as major mechanical work. Paint was done by his brother some time ago, and has a little pearl in it. I think it needed some exhaust work, and the AC wasn't blowing cold. If anyone is seriously interested in the car I have the PO's phone number still.

Does anyone know the car well enough to know whether it is a true Gran Sport? I thought I had seen threads on this forum where GS Rivs with the standard interior warranted a second look regarding the GS claim. I know that GS was just an option and could be purchased with standard interior, but it was my understanding that the deluxe interior was commonly paired with the GS option.

I recently went through the 1965 option list for a Riviera when I was trying to figure out some things on my car. The Gran Sport option was just that - GS option alone. From what I've seen over the years, most had the custom interior which also included the ribbed rocker moldings. Ribbed rocker molding package was also available as a seperate option away from the custom interior so this Colorado car could be correct.

The seller could have been a lot more descriptive about this car and has mentioned almost nothing about it's past or present condition. I knew there was something about the color that didn't look right and the pearl white explains it. If the seller wanted to highlight this car then perhaps a set of whitewalls would have looked better then those rasied white letter tires ?

Rich,

the current seller only had the car about a week before putting it on ebay, I doubt he did anything more than clean it a little. I don't think he is looking to put any money into it, just looking to get a bunch out of it.

OK Riviera People: Several things to consider with the GS models. Since a hand full were sold at auction for big dough there have been more than a handful for sale for big asking prices. I think the majority of these were purchased on Craig's List from realistic sellers by re-hoofers looking to really cash in.

Even though 3,000 units of this model, compared to say a 73 Monte Carlo with 250K + units seems rare, because of the dollar amount involved there are plenty on the market. Personally, I was enchanted with the mythology of a 65 Riv GS for longer than I care to remember. I drove mine almost daily for 15 years and now, looking back I really don't see that much of a difference between the GS and a regular 65 Riv. Remember, each car has it's own personality which is a cocktail of color combos, equipment, condition and the owner's energy. Mitch
