I have a real nice AM / FM 65 radio that works but needs some attention ( filter condenser ? ) . I am trying to decide if I should convert it to modern circuitry or have it gone over by someone . Any thoughts ? Do you know of a good repair person with reasonable prices or a good place to get it converted ?

Hey Dick,

It seems as if all the little guys (shops) that used to recondition are slowly disappearing. If I had the choice to make, I think I'd probably go with modern circuitry as it might turn out to be more dependable in the long run ?

Imagine the expectations a person laying out close to $5,000 in 1965 money had in the quality of their radio. That's 5 years before we put a man on the moon.

After 50 years those old paper capacitors will need replacing with plastic film ones. Do that and put in a correct new set of speakers and you'll be as happy as a 1960's banker.

Actually, if TV's had skipped, froze, and burped with tubes as much as they do now with the digital signal I don't think it would have caught on. Digital sucks, ask a guitar player.

These are guys I could hang out with:

I went through this about a year ago in my '68 GS 400. I went with the new innards and kept the radio chassis and controls in place. I'm happy with it and would do it again. Here are a few of my observations:

* You'll probably need new speakers since the impedance of modern circuitry is different as is the wiring (two wires vs. one wire with frame ground). The speakers, depending on quality, can double the initial cost.

* You'll be able to retain your current external controls, which is great.

* I was without my radio for about 9 weeks. I wasn't in a hurry, but the gentleman that performed the service had a lot of radios ahead of me.

* If you are an audiophile you'll be disappointed. If you are happy with driver quality, yet better than original, then you'll be happy (at least this was the case for me)

* You will also get a new hole in the back of the radio chassis for an RCA jack for connecting modern MP3 players. You'll need to think about where you'll run this. In my GS I placed mine in the glove box and it works well for me. Others may not find that acceptable.

If you're looking for testimonials I can look up the web link of the company I used. I also know that some of the guys in the Review offer this service and it is great to support those that support the community.
