Guest 27oldcry
My 27 Chrysler Finer 70 is now drivable, after Brakes, wheel bearings, clutch, exhaust, Fluid flush, and tune up. Now after driving a mile or two it is impossible to shift. I flushed the tranny and refilled with Mobile 600w Super Cylinder Oil. Is there a syncro tranny of a later year that will bolt into this old girl? If so does anny one have a good one for sale???Thanks, JGG
28 Chrysler
Was this the first time you drove this car, or did it sift right before? Is the clutch adjusted correctly ?This tranny will not shift like a modern one. It is hard to get the engine speed to match the gear speed.Double clutching helps but you still need to shift slow.First to second gear will be done at about 5-8 MPH and it take a bit of practice. Guest 27oldcry
No, not the first time I have driven it. I have been double clutching and trying to match engine speed but when it is warmed up nothing helps. I had the clutch professionally rebuilt and I think it is adjusted corectly but I will pull out the floor boards and check it again. Peddle free travel feels right but even when you are stopped it grinds into first gear, The clutch feels like it is disingauging but it must be still spinning the tranny. I thought the 600w oil would help with this problem but it hasn't.Thanks for the advice, maybe I don't have it mastered yet.
lozrocks
Peddle free travel feels right but even when you are stopped it grinds into first gear.If it is grinding when you select first gear then there is a problem. The clutch/pressure plate is not correctly set up.When you have the floor boards out, remove the cover plate on the bell housing and watch the operation of the clutch/pressure plate. With the engine running, the clutch plate should come to a complete stop when the clutch pedal is depressed.
Guest art s
There may be another cause. Late last year before a fairly long tour I was going around the car greasing everything up. Pivot points, king pins, shackles, etc. There is a grease fitting down by the rear passenger side of the engine that has a tube I assumed went to the pivot for the throw-out bearing. I was wrong and now I have the same problem. Should have used gear oil in that application. Not sure how I am going to get the grease out and working properly again. Anyone have suggestions? Guest 27oldcry
Hi, I have the original Lubrication chart for a 27 Finer 70 and it dodesn't show anything on the passanger side like you have described. I will remove my floor boards to work on my clutch today or tomorrow and will check further. Thanks JGG
Guest art s
Ours is a slightly different model. We have a March 1928 model 72 and the lubrication chart labels it as a clutch release bearing using Whitmore compound 0 which is the same as what is in the rear end. Looks like the rear axle bearings, the king pins, and the tie rod ends get the same lube. Guest 27oldcry
After a complete evaluation and re-adjustment of the Clutch linkage , tightened up 1/2 turn, and pressure plate adjustments, I narrowed the throw-out bearing freeplay down from 3/16" to 1/8", it works fine. I also think the clutch disc was hanging up on the spline and was making enough contact with the flywheel to keep it spinning. A test drive when our May 2 snow melts will tell if it is fixed. Thanks, JGG
