1913 Chalmers exhaust valves

Recommended Posts

Hi Andy;

I ordered new stainless exhaust valves from Egge Machine in California for my 1914 Chalmers Master Six. You can Google them I am sure. You will probably have to send them an old one to copy. Forget just sending a diagram, they won't work from it, and shouldn't.

I can try and find the name of the Rayfield expert that helped me. PM or email me. Jim 43 dstamp4@comcast.net

Hi Jim 43,

Thanks for the contact, I may have found an answer here in the UK, there is a Caterpillar engine with a very similar size exhaust valve that will be perfect with only a small amount of modification, did you have to do any work on the valve guides ? mine are not the best. Andy

Hi Andy;

Three of my valve guides were broken so I made six new ones. The ones in my "T" head were about 4" long and about 1 1/2" at the widest point. I bought some cast iron rod from a supply company and turned out one on the lathe. It took a long time and piles of shavings. I then brightened up and bought cast rod the size of the main body of the guide and some steel washers that matched the size of the spring platform making up the widest part of the guide. The washers were very thick, 1/4" or more. I machined the correct spot for the washer to seat on the guide and silver soldered each on in place on their guide. That went much faster than machining the whole thing out of one piece. I rough reamed the valve hole on the lathe and the final ream after I had installed it in the engine. They worked fine and I was happy to have new guides to go with the new valves.

If your guides are intact but worn and the new valves have the size to accommodate, you might try reaming out the old guides to a larger size. Jim43
