Speedometer

Have read posts and watched the video on replacing the gears on the speedometer. Before I spend the money on the gears is there something else I should check first. Quit working about 100 miles ago. Odometer will go to 1/10th and stop - speedometer doesn't work at all

Thanks

Normally, it is not the gears in the speedometer that are the problem but the gears in the odometer, the speedo keeps working ok. Your problem appears to be either a wiring one, speedo motor or a sending unit. I would first check all wiring and connections, this would cost you nothing. Secondly probably replacement of the sending unit may be in order. Maybe you can pick up a working one fairly cheap. If this fails maybe a speedo head is required. But I would no go headlong into spending a lot of money or douing a lot of work until you get some other opinions.\Good Luck. Bob

Think I've used the wrong terms here. The speed indicator? needle works fine. The Odometer (which is accumulative for mileage?) does not work at all. The "trip meter" or "trip odometer"?) which is resetable will go to 1/10th of a mile after resetting and not further. Does this after each reset. Sorry I wasn't more secific in first post.

That's ok, your problem now is definitely the odometer gears. I think you can get them at TCParts. Good luck.Bob

Took the speedometer apart, the gears are not broken, nor binding in any way. the odometer and trip meter wheels all move OK when I rotate the gears by hand. I am not sure how everything works electrically but since the speedometer needle seems to work OK and the odometer and trip meter don't is this a gear problem or electrical or possibly both?

The small gear looks fine, no broken or missing teeth, although it feels a little "soft". If I squeeze it there is some give to it, unlike hard plastic?

Replaced both gears (hard to believe something that small costs so much)! Working fine now.

Thanks All.

You have to remember that someone had to tool up for those gears and produce them. This before the magic "copying machine"

Any chance you could post the video that you referenced? I'm going to attempt to fix my odometer, but don't have the slightest idea where to begin as far as taking the dashboard apart to get at the gear. Seems like all the tutorials everyone used to link to are down now, so I'm stuck before I can even get started!

Thanks!

Cool, thanks for replying to quickly. I just wish there were a video about actually getting to the odometer in the first place. I think I could definitely follow that video if I knew how to get into it x_x

merr; don't do what I did. I drink a whole pot of coffee. I started acting like two kids on Red Koolaid. Started getting ahead of myself and would have to redo something. If this is your first time to take it off allow yourself about 4 hours and only two cups of coffee.

"information for removing the dash. It is found at the Yahoo Forum"

Yikes ...anybody have a better link to how to remove dash/speedometer?

Had to "join" Yahoo Forum to look for the one mentioned above. Never did find it!

Not really interested in sex with teenage sheep and the other crap that came up there but would like to print the procedure for removing the speedo cluster for my uncle so he can fix his!

Saved these instructions when I found them, now to see if attaching on a reply to posting works like it does when you start the posting. Also know that spedo gear change is on u-tube, don't remember how I found it. Doesn't tell you how to get the cluster out of dash, does good job of telling how not to break the speed needle and cleaning out old gear teeth from mechanism.

I am co mod on the site you mentioned and take offense at what you said. Dot and I are careful to check what is there. I assume that you wish us to DELETE your membership?

You can find the link by clicking on the "LINK" tab on the home page, then go down to Odometer gears

where to get them

Bill,

I think you misunderstood my post. #15 post on this thread by TNtc had a link to Yahoo groups. I clicked it and then pasted : "Replacing TC Odometer Gear.pdf " into the search.

To use "search" from that group I had to "sign-up" (I,e. "join") From THAT site I was then presented with a huge list to scroll through. After going through 20 or so pages I was still unable to find any "link" to the "TC Odometer pdf". I thought I found it and clicked on the post. For several hours my "inbox" was flooded with invitations to teenage sex sites ...(and yes there was one for sheep!) Cancelling the membership at yahoo groups stopped most of it. I was very offended by the sites being recommended and emailing me.

My post here was intended as a warning to others to be careful as well as a request for a "different way" to obtain the needed files. At least 2 wonderful members of this BBS responded with the information.

Post #19 by Digger914 has put the info on here so the next person looking for it will be able to locate it easily. (Thank you!)

In no way did I mean to imply that this site "directs one to porn" and I am sure TNtc was not aware that his link did so.

I have only recently joined this forum, (mainly to help an uncle of mine that has no internet and recently acquired a TC) and have found it to be an excellent source of information.

Offending anyone here was never my intention....I hope you understand that now.

I'm even more confused now! Had no problem with "Odometer gears" site at all.

Folks there were great ...confirmed post haste that I was looking at the correct gears via email.

Printed the order info and drove it to my uncle. (Downloaded the YouTube video and took it on my laptop for him to watch)

Great instructions there!

He was curious "how" to remove the speedo from the car. Info I have now printed and will drive back out to him.

No worries. I'll try the link you posted above. Learning more about the TC everyday. Was kind of a fluke that my uncle bought it. (Scratched his nose at the wrong time at an auction! LOL)

Since he doesn't have internet I volunteered to help find a place to help sell it. He really doesn't want the car. Most of the "TC" folks I have come across have been really nice, (you included) so I was very concerned that I offended. Got on here to post an advert for sale and a link to the craigslist ad I put up for him.
