In other news...

While away on Saturday and during the week days for work, I come home to different backyard scenes.

 

My neighbour sent this one of the cement pump truck required to get to my furthest corner of the wall.

 

 

24 hours later and little rain the concrete was set.

 

Then,

Yesterday all the forms were taken down, the yard cleaned up of construction debris and waiting for the drainage to be placed and the back filling to begin.

 

Big changes in less than a month (weather considering...).

I read you were thinking of using Stan Uher's shop in Blenheim and totally agree with you he would be a good choice for your upholstery repair.  He worked for RM Restoration after his apprenticeship and then opened his own shop around 1987.  Stan may have worked on the '58 s top, RM had few workers back in 1985.  I have a small metal repair job there on the McLaughlin's right front fender which he has promised me soon.

 

Here is a photo, which my wife snapped, of Stan and his wife during the Friday RetroFest/RM Sotheby's parade, he is driving his 1915 Gray Dort, a Chatham built car.

Everyone knows the expression "Be careful what you wish for"?

 

I'm working out of town yesterday and about mid morning my phone rings and it is my contractor calling. It seems we had an ever so brief conversation about my wanting to put in a patio for the kids that it would clean the side yard up and hopefully be a plus when we come to sell.

WELL..

He tells me he is doing a job removing paver bricks and just happens to have some I can have if I want them, for free.

Giving him rough dimensions and suggesting where he could drop them I continued on with my day.

Went over to drop off some equipment after work and see what he gave me...

 

 

Sheesh! 😲

Guess what I'll be doing this holiday weekend....

The job I mentioned was the Ford Dealership where I bought my F150 in 2011.

I've had it for eight years now and try to keep it looking good. A couple of the salesmen came out to ask me if I would be interested in trading for a new one?

I asked just what they would give me on value and what a new exact one would be?

This is only my 2nd new vehicle and knew the answer was not one I was going to be pleased with what what the hey...

Turns out I would be making payments higher than what my truck was worth back then so told them at 106,000 kms (66,000 miles) I haven't broken it in yet so thank you for thinking of me.

 

Day of purchase 2011, same lot / Dealership.

 

At least I'm getting back a few bucks providing service...

Reminds me of when I went to go "pick up some free firewood" that my Father-in-law's buddy just had cut down.  It ended up being an entire tree that had a 3 1/2' diameter trunk.  It took two trips with my flat bed trailer and my truck bed full to get it all.  I finally got it all split this past Winter.

I moved 480 of those suckers over to the other side of the property where the patio will be by 10 last night.

They are not heavy but it is hard on my back bending like that. 

My little trailer held 120 nicely and my JD LT133 in low wasn't struggling but after the 4th load (and the mosquitoes...) I'd had enough.

 

Put a small dent in the pile but need to concentrate moving what was dumped into my drain ditch before the predicted rain on Monday otherwise it will back up into the garage (again..).

Wish the driver was here to help!

 

If I don't get some help from my son I might have to consider raising the rent. LOL

Don't worry John, we are planning an afternoon drive Sunday taking the wine route and sample a few glasses.

Had to continue slugging away with the paver bricks yesterday and with the warm temps (no really complaining as it has been dry!) I was soaking wet by 10:30.

 

Getting close to clearing my drain ditch out and with figuring I had a lot of bricks decided to make a walkway and border around some shrubs in the back yard.

 

In reference to John's "possible thread" on reasons for NOT driving my Buick had a plan to change that...

I packed up about 12:30, fired up the car and picked up my wife saying not to plan for dinner today.

First stop was to my other son's place to check on their plants as they are away till Wednesday.

He told us about and showed us the ring he is going to present to his long time girl friend (10 years) and we are waiting to he how that went. 

 

We then headed along the Detroit River at a leisurely pace taking note of the high water again. 

Once at the start of Lake Erie we follow the lake road passing many winery's till coming to View Pointe Estate Winery where I decided to pull in and taste a few.

 

It indeed is quite the view and the day was perfect to show the expanse of this Great Lake.

 

Hard to see but that is a lake freighter out in the shipping channel a bit to the right of the frame heading towards The Welland Canal where it will eventually go into Lake Ontario and points east i suspect.

 

This is one nice setting.

 

 

After a small sampling we bought two bottles of white I really enjoyed so headed back to the car to continue the ride.

 

The car fired right up, didn't show signs of running hot and away we went.

Finally came to a little place call Cedar Beach and pulled in for a picture. Sadly the smell of dead fish wasn't nice and Cindy had to hold her nose saying let's get out of here!

Aw the smells of summer! LOL

 

Then next place is the Town of Kingsville. We drove up to the bluff where there are some beautiful homes but the lake side offers this view.

 

The harbour at the edge of Town holds this government ferry that is being taken out of commission for a new multi million dollar new one. They ferry vehicles and products over to Pelee Island 15 miles in the middle of the lake for the permanent residents and tourism industry.

Might take the Special one day once I save up....

 

With no time limit in mind we continued on towards Pointe Pelee National Park where my grandparents and parents had cottages when I was young.

I have posted a picture at this location before but with the high water it just isn't the same anymore...

 

There used to be about 30 feet of beach in front of that fellows home but it is gone with rocks there now! It also has eroded along the die of the property to the point another severe storm will likely have that shed in the water!!

This is the main road on into the Park and if the water comes over the road the farmland on the right will be flooded as the road acts as the dike.

Looks like mother nature is trying to reclaim her property...

 

We followed on around the the east side of the Pointe coming to Wheatley which is a big fishing port (no dead fish smells here...) and continued on towards home.

It's now after 6:30 and the stomachs needed something so stopped into the Beach House Restaurant back in Kingsville.

 

With a light breeze and the patio being in the shade had a great supper and drink.

 

Had to stop for a shot In Essex at the train station that serves no line now.

 

Pulled into the driveway about 8:45 having had a full afternoon/evening.

 

Touch wood, the Special is performing really well.

The trip odometer is about to roll over to 0 again meaning I have about 1,000 miles on so far this year.

The ride beats working on “Camino de Buick”

With Monday being our Canada Day Holiday and those paver stones not moving by themselves, spent the morning getting at them.

The goal was to clear the little ditch I put in to drain the back yard of water which helps keep it out of the garage.

With storm predictions starting on Tuesday there was no choice but to keep plugging away in the 91 degree heat.

 

Happy with the progress I pulled the Special out and was going to head for home and clean up before heading over to the weekly cruise-in but realised I needed the trailer there to load up "things" that were ordered to be taken to the dump.

Hmmm....

How to kill two birds with one stone.

 

Not the first time I've done this and looking to the day we can pull a small house trailer.

It sure got a few thumbs up.

 

Cindy decided to stay home so went over to meet two of my friends and had some dinner. (wings are good there). I thought I was early but had to start a centre row which was OK.

 

Walked around and came upon this Studebaker that all was stock and had the swamp cooler which is eye catching.

 

Interesting to hear peoples questions and amazement with this setup.

 

I missed the 200 dollar 50/50 by one number but that is usually the norm... so asked Joe if he wanted to check out my son's new house as he lives not far from the cruise-in.

 

Joe has a BIG garage he rebuilt to house his collection of eight vehicles which my boy has seen so Joe said he was going to send an email to him (they are away on vacation) saying he missed a good party but thought his garage was too small. hahaha

 

Next we headed over to my place to show him the new retaining wall.

The main road is being widened to four lanes which will change the action to "the drag way" this kind of thing usually does once completed for those impatient drivers.

 

Joe's Cadillac is somewhat like my car in that it is mostly original having been painted once early in its life.

 

A big difference is that being a Cadillac it got a little better treatment than mine did so it is in much better condition but Joe had to do the usual mechanical things from sitting and age.

 

The car is a local one that we both know the daughter of the original owner. She bought it from her Dad when he had bought a '56 Cadillac and was the one who had it painted.

 

I love having it and mine together!

It makes the Special seem small by comparison.

Can't wait to have the Limited by the Cadillac and see if there still is that difference...

 

Saying good bye I then turned to loading up the "things" into the trailer for the trip to the dump in the morning....

At least with the sun going down the temperature dropped.

Tuesday managed to spend most of the day on the paver stones again in 92 degree heat. Fortunately there is shade but man bending over is a killer!

The retainer wall and the back filling at home is on hold till an order of long bolts comes in to bolt on the 6x6 posts for the fence. Rather than put them in the ground they are being bolted to the back of the wall which will help keep them from rotting needing replacement way down the road...

One has to think German engineering here.

So between work and playing with the Special... my free time is... not.

 

I lost count as to how many I have moved so far but will have to keep stacking further on the lawn as they are high enough now.

 

And so it goes...

While I have been busy at work and with property issues it hasn't been all work and no play.

Forgot to mention my help was requested on this past Monday from a friend who has a 1965 Riviera Gran Sport.

He had pulled the motor and transmission early this year to have them rebuilt and while out wanted to detail under the hood. 

This is a factory numbered car with the dual quad setup and while the interior is in excellent original condition he wanted the drive train done.

 

With the rebuilt units back in he wanted my help to set the distributor and put the intake on with those dual carbs in place having been totally rebuilt also and set up.

Man that unit is heavy like that!

 

He has the car jacked up quite high which made the reach interesting.

 

There is still lots to hook up but sure it will be on the road soon.

Unfortunately I didn't take a shot of the installed rebuilt carbs that day but here is a shot before the rebuilding.

 

 

Meanwhile Deryl is still able to drive as he has this one too.

 

It was a nice two hour diversion for me.

One week in 90 degree heat and 5200 bricks later I started grading and placing them.

 

Going to be tweaking it a bit as I'm not 100% with the pattern yet.

One thing for sure, I'm pretty confident I won't run out of them...

With the weekend switching between customers and the paver stones decided to go to the weekly Monday Cruise-in at Brews & Cues.

Seems I get the centre spot now.

 

That family of guys were quite taken with the Special.

When they asked a few questions and found out I've had it since High School they were even more interested. One fellow asked if he could sit behind the wheel to get the feel of her and didn't realise cars had such big steering wheels even with power steering.

As it was time to go I asked them to watch this.

I turned the key on explaining you could lock the ignition switch or pull the key out and just shut it off. Then I raised my hands and hit the starter showing them it is on the bottom of the gas pedal.

Apparently they never were Buick fans as they didn't know that was how it was done back then. 

Fun.😀

 

We pulled out and headed to Amherstburg for an ice cream again having to make a detour due to the Detroit River flooding some stretches of the road.

Places that had built berms years ago for high water protection will be redoing them to protect their homes and property.

That's NOT rain water on the road and it is draining into the storm sewer system. Sever wind storms are only going to make the situation worse for waterfront property owners...

 

Once we finished our ice cream it was time to head home before those nasty fish flies came out otherwise it was a nice evening for a drive.

 

On the edge of town there is a public spot for pictures so...

 

The car is performing well but noticed a bit of rad fluid at the thermostat housing when I parked her so will check clamps and level before the next outing.

I will also check to see if it is time for an oil change.

Every day I come home to a different scene in my back yard.

The wall/fence project is moving right along so had to deal with the last bit of stuff to let the crew grade the property.

These will be taken apart to store inside my shed but they will require some arm strong efforts and possibly some heat being they are rusty.

 

Monday they had all the 6x6 posts bolted on.

 

With all the different vehicles in my back yard at times I just had to get into the act as it made loading things up to dispose of much easier.

 

Then tonight the scene looked like this.

 

Still more to do regarding hooking up drainage, back filling and the stone that will be behind the garage for a possible extension but... it's starting to look finished.

Before heading home for dinner I took an hour to work on the paver stones.

The grading had to be levelled (or sloped away from the driveway as it is lower than the lawn).

 

Using a beam I had and a line I started to place stones for a bit. Only did a little as we are into another stretch of 90 degree heat again.

Thank heavens for shade and a slight breeze.

 

I'm thinking I might have enough to go back along the side of the garage...

Still thinking about this being free!

Took Sunday off to enjoy the Buick at an Italian Club Car Show.

 

To get a good spot I met two of my car buddies in the parking lot before opening at 9 am so we could park together.

It was filling up fast but the organiser managed to move some pick nick tables and got us under some shade.

 

It was a perfect location as it was near the pavilion serving great food other than the usual over priced hot dogs, sausage and prepackaged hamburgs....

Being licensed didn't hurt either. 

Deryl drove his other Riv as his '65 developed a coolant leak before he even started it at one of the heads and was waiting for new gaskets for the rebuilder to come to his house and redo them! 

 

Other than those large tires and rims this car is all stock but only has the correct single four barrel. 

 

Sitting behind the Special and looking at Deryl's car it does catch ones eye.

 

Won a door prise of a prepaid coffee card, had a fantastic set of ribs, a drink and enjoyed the day with friends.

 

And the shade kept the car cool all day.

With contract work in play I'm trying to deal with this heat the country is being faced with. Yesterday it was 91 degrees and felt like 100 ! Having a cooler with water helps but with that dark glass the heat hits you both back and front...

Days like this make me think I should have stayed in school!

 

Meantime, I'm not the only one dealing with this.

After several meetings with my contractor it has been decided, due to limited access after all the fencing and landscaping is in effect, that the space behind my garage will be prepped to eventually enlarge the garage down the road.

Getting lumber back here is one thing but loads of gravel and concrete well, that's what held up the rebuilding of the wall/fence for so long.

Just like where to start and stop on a car, this project is taking on a life of it's own too...

 

Not sure how long I can look at a concrete pad before building the addition but convinced if I want to do this, now is the time to start.

 

With a bit of work I will knock open the back wall and put a 16 ft garage door on for access out back which I can leave in later to separate the cars from the mess from working on the Limited.

 

I'm not big on the "bucket list" thing but... why not live the dream?

As my dearly departed father-in-law would say, "It's only money".

 

Tomorrow is supposed to be 100 degrees or more!

Have a meeting out to my friends place to help with moving some things that I will post after it happens. I'm considering driving the Special (even though it doesn't have air conditioning) as the group we are meeting with has an appreciation for antique machinery. 

Should be an interesting day.

@dei the garage extension is the way to go.  Will you have to meet minimum set back codes?  Or will the garage go up to the retaining wall?  I kinda wish I had put in a garage instead of the shed.  But that's a closed subject at this location at this point in time.

I have to agree right now and will conform to the set back regulations which look good to be able to get my cars back there when the build happens. Basically I could put the Limited and the Special back there but need to make space for my Whippet, Overland and '52 Ford truck at some point down the road...

HOT, HOT, AND HOT!

 

But with a cooler of water managed to endure the day.

Headed over to get the Special early and struck out to my friend (and partner in crime) for the meeting/work day some 30 miles away.

With the top down, 77 degrees and very light traffic it was a relaxing drive.

 

The purpose of the meeting was to organise our rail road ties, rail, signals and plan the move for the Plymouth engine we are donating to a charitable registered group some 3 hours east of here.

 

I arrived about 9 am to find part of the group there already.

 

Rick & I had big plans for this 36 inch narrow gauge RR and starting in 2005 we single handedly moved things to his 3 acre property over an 18 month period laying out rail and ties where we hoped to put a line in...

The object today was to move everything in a central location aiding bringing in a flat bed trailer to quickly load things up on the next trip.

 

Fast forward 5 hours and most of the rail was stacked in four piles with the aid of that bobcat (which we didn't have back in 2005/2006, we hand bombed it all on two car trailers...).

 

This is 30 lb rail and average 20ft lengths so it was a blessing for the machine today!

 

With wood ties and rail out of the way a beavertail trailer will be backed in front of the Plymouth engine and winched up for it's trip to the new home a few weeks from now. They figure it will be running with in two years as they have a dedicated group of volunteers.

 

With 40 ties loaded up in two trucks and a trailer it was time to call it quits and re-hydrate with a cold one!

 

By 3 it was time to head home in the now 96 degree heat.

Having sat all day in the sun the seats in the Special WERE A SCORCHER but she fired right up and never complained on the way home!

 

Fortunately the forecast for rain held off and after a good supper of corn on the cab put her away for the night.

Having posted my previous day just before supper I had a sudden surprise with a storm alert right after stating hail and wind were on it's way!

Since the Special was home sitting there with the top down didn't wait to put it up and headed to her garage.

 

This picture doesn't capture it but bits of small branches were flying across the road but the rain/hail was holding off. Managed to catch the two lights green on the way and thankfully I had the garage door remote in hand and pressed it as soon as I turned the corner to drive in quickly.

Just as I shut her off I look behind me and in the driveway was a 10 foot long branch 3 inches round that had missed me and the car on the way in!!

What a way to end the day... It could have been real ugly!

The weather front that came through was mostly wind fortunately but it really dropped the temperature and humidity so having what I call "played" yesterday, it was time to catch up on some lawn work instead of taking the Special out again.

Managed to finish up by 3 and headed home to "orders from headquarters" with more yard work.

With that out of the way I needed to continue with priming the shed I moved to the side of the garage before the new fence gets put up as there will only be 14" there to work when all is said and done.

 

Contrary to what my wife wanted I'm glad I did this move as the parts saved from the Limited parts car fit mostly in the back section and there is room for other items in the front yet.

 

The crew will be continuing to build up and pack the gravel this week in preparation to pour the concrete pad which will eventually be the addition to the garage. There will be lots to do before that addition is built like opening the back up and a new garage door for access and landscaping the yard from all the yard drainage and fence work but can visualise the end goal now.

Well, another day compacting and placing forms and tomorrow the pad will be poured.

 

The basic grading in done and we are going to wait till next spring (or possibly this Fall) for sod with the heat we are having! Not interested in jacking up my water bill for grass after all this.

As to busy Joe, my summers are kinda like that, fitting things in with work and play.

 

With regards to the future garage pad, it really wasn't in the budget (and there goes some money towards the Limited engine rebuild...) but I'm looking down the road when the time comes that we sell the place where I keep the Special and some of the other collection. That will be creeping up sooner than I want so... better to be prepared than sleeping at the switch.

 

Speaking about the other place...

I spent about two hours placing more of the paver stones to try and get some of them moved before the neighbours get to wondering what is being stored on the property and/or how long...

Looks like I will be placing more towards the back as the pile shown isn't disappearing too fast.

 

Called home to get a weather report to see if it would be OK to go to a Tuesday evening Cruise-in and was told it looked to be OK so parked everything to get the Special out and headed home to pick up the wife.

Pulled into the driveway and found this.

 

Seems that to maintain the same height as the back fence, the posts are to be that high and the grading will be put in accordingly as evidenced by the 2x6 at the bottom.

 

Thank heavens we agreed the finished side of the fence boards will be on his side as it's going to be TIGHT in there to put the finish coat on the sheds even with that!

 

While changing my clothes don't I hear a crack of thunder!

Once again the weather had changed dramatically so jumped in the car and headed back to her garage. Man did this come up FAST!

 

 

This time there was some rain drops but made it again into the garage before the big down pour. PHEW! 

 

We went out for supper anyway while it rained steady the whole time but when leaving for home it quit and the sun peaked out. 

There is always next week for the Tuesday Cruise-in.

I was up at 6 this morning to the sound of a truck backing up so through some shoes on and found the cement truck getting into position to pour the pad. A crew of four and myproject foreman were ready and digging into the work.

By 8 am it is all in and the finishing touches are in play.

With the fencing up it sure doesn't look quite as big but at the height the boards are there is going to be lot's of privacy!

 

Was told to wet the pad down for a few days which is no problem and gives me a moment to ponder a future build...

Sneaked out Wednesday evening to another weekly Cruise-in as it was a nice night.

Met up with one of my friends whose Lincoln I'd love to have (not to replace the Buicks of course 😉)

 

Was talked into going for sushi (which I'm not a fan). Crazy, crazy money for rice, raw fish & vegetables in my opinion... Could have put a tank of gas in the Special!

 

Wandered around a bit and admired the Pontiac next to me.

 

This Cadillac showed up and looks to be in original condition.

 

With a California sticker on the windshield and thinning paint on the hood and one fender but no rust showing it could very well be an original western car.

 

Had an unexpected job cancellation for this weekend so now have a choice to attend a somewhat local car show (where we go out for ice cream occasionally) or St John's at the Inn or I could stay home and clean up around the back yard and dream of a garage addition.

Decisions, decisions...

So... the decision was to go to the annual Car Show out in Amherstburg today.

 

We took our time getting up and arrived at 10 to find we were having to park four blocks away from the shady preferred Park and Registration Pavilion but afforded the opportunity to see cars going there and catching the other side of the road on the way back. Our registration # was 485 and heard it reached 575 later.

 

 

This street is the oldest part of Town only one block from the Detroit River with Historic Fort Malden five blocks to the right of this shot.

 

The "Gordon House" was a residence built in 1798.

It was moved to this present location and restored to make room for those ugly million dollar condominiums that look out on the river from the other side...

 

It was interesting sitting in the early morning shade across the street watching the public response to the Special.

 

The car show was filled with as they say, everything from soup to nuts (car owners included 😵) but in the commercial section of those condo's this caught my eye.

 

It intrigued me so inquired inside to get details.

 

These are new production units with some interesting qualities but when told a base unit started at 28,000 US, started to look at it a bit differently with our current exchanged rate of 35%. 

 

Even this unit lacks a bathroom or porta potty, water holding tank, heater so not quite what I'd spend to tow behind the Special. It does have electric brakes but still weighs in at 1,350 dry weight. Mama needs a few more things than just a place to sleep.

 

This car show had a lot of the usual local cars I've seen this summer but there were a large group of brand new Corvettes taking up space (to me...) but guess new cars are at some point old cars right? And so it goes with today's car shows.

 

Headed for home after 3 as the skies look somewhat threatening and the 89 degree heat had us both just about done in but a nice day otherwise.

Pulled the car into the garage after dropping of my wife and while disconnecting the battery looked down at the rad to find this.

 

Poor thing, never saw anything flying in front of me but will take care of it tomorrow.

Though some would argue that I failed to grow up altogether...

 

It is a good show Joe and knowing you grew up there, sure you can imagine the Park by the High School and Dalhousie St. filled with cars and trucks almost to the Beer Store with live entertainment on the patio at the Legion.

It sure isn't the quality show you took the Caballero to at St. John's but a fun day in a quaint small Town on the water!

Since I used the car trailer back in the end of May to take the Limited to the scrap recycler it has been parked in the driveway waiting to put the Whippet back on so I could park things inside again.

Since the battery is totally dead I used the manual winch which I've done before but was drenched to the bone when done as it was 89 degrees again. With it parked out of the way I can now get a load of screenings to get at that patio I'm going to put in behind her.

 

I really should get her going again as it was one of Dad's thrills and pride to show off how the car turned out.
