Typically on older gearboxes, there's a drain plug on the bottom and a fill plug on the side. In most cases, you simply fill through the side plug until the oil runs out through the hole. It's usually around 2 quarts, but it varies from car to car. It's not very precise, but it's the safest way to be sure it's full.

I agree with Matt. One thing to add to this is to make certain that the car is on a level surface while filling with fluid.
