Guest reatta_ross
well friday as i was going down the road the car shut off on me and after i pulled in and let it cool down i tried to start it and it fired up but it is now making a bad clicking noise. SOOOOOO, at first i thought it was the alternator so i put a new one in... still ticking, so next i thought it may be the tensioner pully, put a new one in... STILL TICKING... sooooo i just got done throwing a new water pump on, STIIIIIIILLLLLL TICKING. NOW im pretty sure i got it pin pointed to the harmonic balancer! hopefully when i have some more cash thats what fixes it, how difficult are they to change because i see there is a mount right in front of it! any help would be great, thanks guys... Guest Corvanti
i'd say it was the crankshaft (harmonic) balancer. check for any missing rubber or cracks on each side of it. ALSO - replace the crankshaft sensor while you are there!!! i replaced both about this time last year. lots of info using the search function: http://forums.aaca.org/search.php?searchid=170339a "quick" way to remove the crank bolt is shown on the ROJ (worked well for me) 88-90 only:Harmonic Balancer Bolt Removal - Reatta Owners Journalalso a Factory Service Manual should be utilized. Guest reatta_ross
hopefully thats what it is, i had a feeling from the get go but was hoping it wasnt, rubber is protruding and there are cracks also, did yours make a back clicking noise? and how much did u spend on the balancer/sensor? Guest Corvanti
yeah, clicked a lot - especially around idle. it seems to be a fairly common problem. the parts are available at "The Reatta Store": Buick Reatta Engine Partsand: Reatta Computers & Sensors

Guest Corvanti
i replaced the oil pressure sensor "since i was there" - i had some fluctuations in the o.p. readings and was getting ready to replace the fuel pump: Buy the ACDelco 19244519 Fuel Pump Switch and Engine Oil Pressure Gauge Sensor Assembly for the Buick Reatta at The Reatta Storemake sure you pick up a new serpentine belt if you haven't already.are you having power steering problems? Guest Mc_Reatta
To help you close the barn door now that the horse is gone, should have removed the serpentine belt and started the car. The presence of the noise would have confirmed it was the HB and saved you a lot of trouble chasing your tail.Engine vibration damper bracket comes off easily enough. Hardest part is cracking the crankshaft nut loose.Don't replace the HB without replacing the crank position sensor at the same time or you will regret not doing so. Take care in adjusting it so you don't chew it up on the first engine start.

padgett
Just as a side note I once replclaced a "C" balancer on the side of the road with the passenger side wheels on a curb. Used the starter to remove. Hard part is getting it tight (170 lb-ft AFAIR) after. "L" balancer needs a puller.

Sorry, this is my first time doing any work on this type of car.if it's a '88 thru '90, it should have the "C" engine, '91 had the "L" engine.it helps if you add a signature line at the bottom of your posts showing the year of your Reatta. You can still get a lot of those parts new from the Mazda dealer (not cheap, but new). Same parts fit an RX-7 of the same vintage with a sunroof.
