Guest Magoo
Because you asked for it! More of the wildly popular early NASCAR stuff, when there was variety on the racetrack. Huge photo essay...is your hero here? More Early NASCAR: The Cars | Mac's Motor City Garage
TexRiv_63
I love all the ford Thunderbirds, never pictured them as racers.
nickelroadster
That Ford is not a thunderbird. It is a 1958 custom two door sedan, the same year that the square bird came out so that it looks a bit like a 58 through 60 Thunderbird.

Guest Magoo
Go to the website link and there is a T-Bird there. These Thunderbirds were interesting race cars. They were built and prepared by an outfit called T-Bird Power Products, which was a division of Holman Moody set up in part to keep the company afloat until Ford officially reentered racing after the AMA ban. They were available with MEL 430 CID engines and as the photos show, they were built as "zippertops." The hardtop roofs were constructed so they could be quickly unbolted, allowing the cars to be raced in either the Grand National or Convertible divisions. In the story there are photos showing the cars both ways.
