A startix and an old brass Stewart Warner Speedometer to what?

I had a couple different guys stop by my shop and sell me some old parts a couple of days ago. The first is a Startix. The only clues as to application were the guy had a grease cap to a scripps booth and a Nash in a bucket of junk from the same barn.

The Speedometer came along with some Buick parts from a 32 and 38 ish model. It looks older than that to me. It appears to be all brass knobs and all. Any guesses? post-43003-14314181656_thumb.jpg

The Startix was made by Bendix and was used on Auburn, Cord, Lincoln, Packard, Pierce Arrow, and Studebaker in the mid '30's. The Stewart Warner speedometer is unrelated to the Startix, it is of an earlier era. Some were sold as accessories and I believe ran off of a cable that went to a front wheel.

Your Cord 810/812 used the Startix, a great device when all is working properly...turn ignition key and it engages starter, as soon as it senses power from generator disengages starter, and if engine stalls automatically tries to start again....if you don't want it I'd be a buyer!

I knew Cord and Auburn used Startix but I figured they were different than this one by the 30's. Since it fits my Cord, I'll be keeping it for the day I convert it back to the original drivetrain. My luck whatever I buy to convert it with will be missing the Startix otherwise.

Thanks for the positive ID.

No they stayed the same through the 30's, think they had a black crinkle finish...by all means keep it for your conversion!

Now I just need the transmission, engine, steering column, box and wheel, the shifter for the column, everything that bolts on the engine and around it. It's a good start though :)

The Startix relies on an electrical "signal" to disengage the starter. There's an interesting device on Ebay now that uses vacuum from intake manifold to do the same thing.....called a Dymatic...

The Startix you have pictured is the early style. It can be identified by the two rectangular holes in the front for the internal bracket that retains the solenoids. The case and back are different as well. This style was phased out in 1933. I know this because I rebuild Startix, it is easy to see when they are on the bench together.

Well if that's the case, I will trade it for a later one if someone has one. Although I someday hope to get a 31-33 Auburn so I may keep it as well if i don't find a trade.

The speedo is for sale. I don't have any cars that old to use it on and have plenty of dust collecting curiousities at the shop already.
