Photo- Pot Hole?

Recommended Posts

Can anyone identify the car passing?

Buster Keaton was known to have a number of Mercer Raceabouts during his lifetime. This car looks very much like one, circa 1920 or so.

Looks like he might be holding the side of the car on before the pot hole and pushing it aside just before the hole. I don't think I've seen that clip before, anyone know what movie was it taken from?

The front bumper is likely aftermarket, and may have been there as part of the mechanism to propel the Model T.

I spent some time this morning researching the car. The scene in question is from Buster Keaton's first feature-length movie, Three Ages (1923). The car is his personal Murphy bodied Series 5 Mercer Raceabout. ( http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0848231/bio ) It also appeared in Seven Chances (1925), with his other Raceabout driven by his sister-in-law Connie Talmadge. The stills below are from that movie.

The good news is that the car survives! It was written up in Hot Rod in 1955, and in Automobile Quarterly in 1964. If anyone has any photos of the 1996 Mercer Reunion it apparently was displayed with Keaton's other Raceabout at that time. ( IMCDb.org: Comments about this movie )
