Guest John.donahue@oracle.com Posted March 23, 2013 Posted March 23, 2013 Hello all, I am the proud new owner of a 1991 TC. I am wondering if anyone can help. I am wanting to replace the older radio with a newer one that might be able to use an IPod and might have a GPS and Bluetooth. I am told that the current radio size is a 1.5 DIN...can anyone confirm the size? Second is that I would welcome any thoughts or suggestions on what radio's others have installed with similar features...iPod, gps and Bluetooth. I was also thinking on installing the cup holder into the CD player slot...I read another post on this website That gave me the idea. Thanks for helping from anyone who replies to this thread....
89TC-16V Posted March 24, 2013 Posted March 24, 2013 they make larger din radios and if not you get the adapter plate and the regular 1 din one and thats all. if you want to just use a ipod or mp3 player and the cassette still works you could always use one of those 1.99$ cassette adapters that have a cord to plug into your ipod and play it through that way
Guest My TC Toy Posted March 27, 2013 Posted March 27, 2013 You probably will not be able to buy anything to fit. You will probably have to make up your own filler plate and install a single din radio of your choice. Your bigger problem will probably be matching speakers to the radio.
Guest dkrom Posted March 27, 2013 Posted March 27, 2013 kits are available at car audio stores .din head unit should fit ,all car audio uses 4 om speakers, my 89 tc uses 5.25 in. in the doors ,behind the seats and ln the tonneau, 3.in. in the dash ,amp fit in with spare tire. with a little help from tin snips i fit 6 in. bass speakers ln tonneau .sounds great. i Will put 1 in. dome speakers in dash soon. if you take your music as serious i do ,use a pro. car audio expert .
Guest Rolf B. Posted April 3, 2013 Posted April 3, 2013 The dash kits work fine and look fine, I did it to put in a Blaupunkt that plays MP3. The speakers do not to be changed they have amps built in and work off of a standard 4/8ohm speaker input, you don't have to touch them. Just do yourself a fovor and get the plug adapters for the new head unit and leave the factory plug intact. Included a photo of my job.
Argosy1430Z Posted April 4, 2013 Posted April 4, 2013 Hello John,Check out e-bay motors item # 300882826973. It is a Mopar AM/FM/CD/Cassette player that will bolt directly in the TC. It even comes with a MP3 adapter.
Guest dkrom Posted April 4, 2013 Posted April 4, 2013 (edited) John, l spent many years creating sound systems and l learned a few things l would like to share with you. First the interior environment of a convertible auto. is a challenge to hearing the music ,but It is one challenge that has great rewards !This environment is also subjected to very hot 140 degrees ,very cold well below freezing, moisture ,ultra violet radiation and severe vibration. can you imagine spending the last 20 years in your car, that's what your speakers have done. door and dash speakers are subjected to extra moisture , dash speakers are literally baked under glass. the door speaker voice coils are bounced and eventually flattened by closing the doors. This is why the life expectancy of speakers in a car is 7 years.Just think how many times your tires, and wiper blades have been renewed in the past 20 plus years. they are made out of the same compounds as your speaker surrounds, they may still work, but they won't sound very good. trying to buy a sound system without listening to it first is not advised ,because the shape of your ear is different than anybody .Take some music that you like to a store where you can listen to the SOUND of different speakers and pick ones that SOUND good to you! Deck power is not enough for a convertible if you dont add an amp.you will end up listening to radio because you dont like the SOUND of your music in your car.Speakers are not expensive, and easy to install.I dont have my dash speakers hooked up right now but with deck power to new speakers in doors and behind seats ,and a small amp. running speakers in rear,my system SOUNDS great.I look forward to getting in my tc and driving while listening to my music on my new SOUND system. hope this helps.Nomad Edited April 18, 2013 by dkrom (see edit history)
Apollothesun Posted April 4, 2013 Posted April 4, 2013 so whats your surround sound getup? curious, i need to upgrade soon too
Guest GregTC Posted April 6, 2013 Posted April 6, 2013 I replaced all the speaker's in my TC and what I did is I removed each of the speaker amps and remounted them on the new speaker's thats if you have the original speaker's to start it sounds great but needs a better deck
Guest dkrom Posted April 6, 2013 Posted April 6, 2013 its like a chain ,only as strong as the weakest link. Nomad
Digger914 Posted April 7, 2013 Posted April 7, 2013 No need to replace original radio to use ipod, CD plug in back of radio will accept ipod, or you could in smart phone and play online radio from your favorite station.Link to plug connect and other useful radio repair instructions Chrysler Infinity II Cassette Stereo: Takeapart / Repair Guide
Apollothesun Posted April 7, 2013 Posted April 7, 2013 i enjoyed the article. i loved it when the author stated "You should see the above scene from an electronics tech's nightmares. " funny how technology changes so rapidly. that was the top of the line back in the day. i smiled when he put it all together he still had to push down a little on the cassette tape to make it work. reminds me blowing air into those nintendo cartridges to make the games work.
Apollothesun Posted April 8, 2013 Posted April 8, 2013 so whats your surround sound getup? curious, i need to upgrade soon too i reread the thread and saw you already installed the unit. sorry i go through these threads late at night. looks great.
Argosy1430Z Posted June 10, 2013 Posted June 10, 2013 Hi John,A Pioneer DEH-P47DH is a 1.5 DIN AM/FM/CD with aux inputs and will fit right in with no modifications. You can also buy the wiring harness (if it is not included) for Chrysler/Dodge to connect to the TC plugs. Simple installation and you can find both on eBay.
