1949 Chrysler beading

Recommended Posts

The original "welting" was stainless steel. It is available from places like Restoration Supply Company. The stainless can be very trick to bend without crimping. Don't ask me how I know. Several companies like Steele Rubber sell "chrome look" plastic welting which is much easier to work with. If you think the finish is too shiney you can dull it down with fine steel wool.

I replaced the stainless beading on our 50 New Yorker Newport. I got it from either Dennis Carpenter or Bob Drake, I can't remember, there weren't many sources for the stainless beaded welting at the time. The web part of the bead wasn't quite as wide as the original if I had to do it over I would make sure the web part is wide enough to slightly stick out of the joint inside the fender well. This will make it easier to install if you can get hold of the web and pull the bead down tight as the fender bolts are tightened. Also the original welting had pie cuts removed from the web to facilitate bending, the harder the bend the closer the cuts. Also there were cut outs around the fender mounting bolts.

The chrome plated plastic stuff is probably easy but doesn't have the look of the stainless.

I looked for photos but I did it before I found out how easy phone photos are. I have the original pieces from our 50 and I can post photos of what they looked like(cutouts and reliefs).

I still have two pieces of the same welting for use on a 48 Chrysler. I am going to get the best tape I can find and put a strip face to face on the web to make it wider and also add a few flags made of tape to make it easier to get hold of to pull the bead tight to the body and fender while tightening the bolts.

My belief is the welting is supposed to be held in place by being pinched and the fender mounting bolts should not be considered as pertinent in holding the welting in place.
