Hi all,I'm thinking of buying a 26/7 tourer (advertised as a 26 but I think it's a 27). The problem is I live in the middle of nowhere, this is not a problem in my 29 or 30 Pontiacs as they will both quite happily cruise at 50+ mph all day. What sort of speed can I expect from the earlier car? I use my cars as daily drivers and do quite a few highway miles which is why speed becomes a factor. Thanks

According to the feet per second of piston travel the 26-27 and early 28 (12 spoke wheels and torque tube drive) should be real happy about 40mph. The ones that I had back in the 60's would just about hit 60 mph as a max (if you waited long enough) and cruised about 40. The other concern I had was that you had to go down to second on long grades and even on short steep ones sometimes. Mine were all sedans (one of each year) of course a tourer is lighter so it should be a bit better.

The early Pontiacs were smoother running (6 cyl vs 4 cyl) than a Chev and had full pressure lubrication but were no better on the road. The later ones (late 28, 29-32) were vastly superior vehicles. I would think nothing of driving my Pontiac 400 to 600 miles a day but really would not want to drive the early ones more than 100 or so miles.

That's about as I suspected Reid. I've made an offer on the car, if I buy it then I think it will be for local use only. I'm the same as you though, don't hesitate to drive my 29 any distance and I expect the 30 will be the same once I sort the cooling issues.

Thinking of your cooling issues.......how full do you fill the rad? Does the engine actually get boiling hot or does the rad merely overflow. According to my manual the rad only needs to be filled above the inlet hose. I can never see coolant in my rad. I just squeeze the upper hose, if I hear sloshing I leave it.

I fill the radiator to the top of the cores, same as my 29. The engine is actually boiling, if it was merely spitting some water out I'd ignore it and let the cooling system find its own level. To be fair it is summer here but it doesn't bother the 29 so don't see why it should bother the 30 either.

I'll look those spindles out this week and send you a photo.
