rjengelhart
Hi. Don't have the expected oil pressure (45lbs) for my Super. Dropped the pan, disassembled and cleaned oil pump clean up screen, still low...about 15lbs. Connected an over-the-counter oil pressure gauge...same results. Thinking maybe rebuilding the pump, but need some help/advic/guidance. Is it a relatively easy...shop manual not especially helpful. Is it unbolt, replace w rebuilt parts and gaskets from the rebuild kit, then bolt back on?Thanks to everybody.vrBob E
Ben Bruce aka First Born
Bob, essentially, yes. BUT low pressure may be due to worn bearings. I would check the bearing clearances, starting with mains, with plastigauge. Ben
rjengelhart
Ben,Thanks for the advice. Concerning the plastigauge, I'm a little reluctant to tackle that (skill limitations), so looking for a mechanic reference from my local club. I've been told the bearings can be replaced form the bottom of the engine wo tearing the entire engine apart. What do you think? Thanks again. If you are working on the oil pump, you have done the worst of it in removing the pan. Just remove a main bearing, then following the directions with bthe plastigauge, place a strip in the bearing, re install, remove again and read the results. What year engine are we talking about? FLYER15015
Hi, Bob E here again. Where is it?Btw, this is a '41 Super, 248ci.Thanks.It's on page 105 of your shop manual, just below the infamous little oil filter screen paragraph that everybody misses............The pressure relief spring and piston are under that big honking nut on the left side of the pump casting picture. The spring will measure 2 3/4". I stretched mine to 3 1/4" and should have gone to 3.5" OR you can put a 1/2" to 3/4" spacer behind it. Old mechanics trick to raise the oil pressure a bit.Check the bottom plate of your pump for wear or distortion, and emory down the housing so that there is a MAX of .0025" clearance from the gears to the bottom plate. Use the drive gear as your guide, NOT the driven gear.Just my $ .02..........and worth every penny........And now back to "Terry"........... Just in case Lamar is lurking.............Mike in Colorado
