195354 Posted February 3, 2013 Posted February 3, 2013 1953 Buick Roadmaster - SkylarkI have a 53 Buick 322 block and that is about it, just sorting out parts now. This car has been apart for years and moved around. Previous owner has lost many of the parts under the hood. My question is what year of 322 internal parts will fit this block. I also will need to come up with heads and the correct intake and carburetor. I want correct casting numbers if possible for the engine. I also have two Dynoflow transmissions what is the best way to tell the year of this. I have boxes and boxes of parts, many of them fit other cars. I have a few intakes and carburetors. Thanks for the helpSteve
Leif Holmberg Posted February 3, 2013 Posted February 3, 2013 Here you can see what Dynaflow you should have on 1953.The best way to really know what`s different from 1953 to 1956 322 engine is to bay a parts book, parts list for those years. There are a lot of different parts even if they are called 322 most of them those years. There are a 264 V8 in 1954 and 1955 as well.Leif in Swedenhttp://forums.aaca.org/f162/dynaflow-code-letters-1953-59-a-328330.html
MrEarl Posted February 4, 2013 Posted February 4, 2013 Steve, I know the pistons were redesigned in 54 and again in 55. The dome height is taller on the 53's threfore I am thinking the heads are different but not sure. There are some external changes such as the shape of the oil pan, different throttle linkage configurations, the right exhaust manifold has the generator mounting bracket molded into it, and the air cleaner and silencer is taller on the 53 than 54/55. I may have a set of heads and intake manifold and carb if you are interested. PM meBy the way, welcome aboard.
Leif Holmberg Posted February 4, 2013 Posted February 4, 2013 Here you can see what needs to be done or changed if put a 1956 engine in 1953-1954-1955 or opposite.Just wonder how many people that have got wrong waterpump those years when bying a new one.At least 1956 are different from earlier years and the timing chain cover below the water pump are different as well. Guest martylum Posted February 7, 2013 Posted February 7, 2013 Steve-I had my 53 Buick Roadmaster project engine rebuilt by a local engine rebuilder. They did not seem to have any problem getting pistons, valves, timing set, etc from their regular engine rebuilding sources. If you really decide to go ahead with engine work in the near future contact me for casting numbers on the heads, etc. Martin Lummarty@oldercar.com
195354 Posted February 16, 2013 Author Posted February 16, 2013 I want to thank everyone providing this information. I am trying to educate myself in Buick engines and transmissions. The knowledge base here will help as I work on this project. Once again Thanks. Steve
