Advice concerning body hardware?

I think you could use either regular fasteners or stainless. From this point on the car will see limited use and be kept inside, so future corrosion possibilities are minimal.....

It's getting harder and harder to find slotted head screws and bolts, the world seems to be honoring Mr. Phillips in a big way.

Contact Tioga Stainless they have a large varity of slot head stainless machine screws. I tumble the stainless steel fasteners in a small rock tumbler with coarse Turkish emery for about a day. When they comeout, they no longer have the 'stainless' look, but appear just like the mild steel the factory used. Tioga does not supply the cheap 18-8 stainless that will actually rust.

Two things to be concerned vis-a-vis stainless fasteners. Paint adhesion if you plan on painting and bolt/nut galling. Roughing the fasteners before paint helps adhesion and use of a good anti sieze on the screw threads will usually avoid the galling problem..........Bob

I try to use stainless steel fasteners for every part except where there may be factory head markings for originality. Most ss fasteners on the market are 18-8 and may stain a little especially if you've ground or filed the head marks off. The introduction of any ferrous metal( like filing the heads with a steel file) will cause the fastener to rust a little. After I remove any head marks I will sand the top with wet-dry paper and WD-40, this will keep the rust away. 3-16 grade stainless is available but at an extra cost. Totally Stainless is a good source as well as Restoration Specialties and the industrial companies like Gage Company or MacMaster Carr Products. I also can recommend a small local industrial supplier by the name of Harvey's Supply Co. in Johnstown PA that can get stainless fastener of all types at a much reduced price and many time less than standard package. Their number is 800-325-8994 ask for Dave.
