Bushwack Posted January 21, 2013 Posted January 21, 2013 In my newly acquired 1989 coupe, every couple minutes I hear a sound coming from (what I think is) behind the CRT. It sounds like a pumping sound (or a motor) that lasts for about 5-10 seconds then stops. I've eliminated the radio/radio antenna and I don't think its the ABS (which appears to work fine). The AC if off (so it shouldn't be the compressor trying to engage; although I know it's low on freon). Anyone have any ideas? Thanks.
Guest Mc_Reatta Posted January 21, 2013 Posted January 21, 2013 May be the mix door motor in the HVAC programmer adjusting to temp changes. Behind glovebox, but the door is closer to the CRT location.
D-a-n-i-e-l Posted January 22, 2013 Posted January 22, 2013 turn it to the run (not started) hit the brake a couple times and listen for the sound. I would bet it is a noisey brake pump. If not with the engine off you can eliminate a few other items.(I am assuming you heard the sound while the car was running)
Bushwack Posted January 22, 2013 Author Posted January 22, 2013 Per Daniel's advice (thank you), I did as he instructed and the noise appear. So it seems to be the brake pump. What's next??? Could it be a relay/fuse issue? Does the pump need to be replaced (brakes work fine, no warning lights appear and I replaced the fluid last week). Can a new accumulator solve this problem?
Jim Posted January 22, 2013 Posted January 22, 2013 From sunny 88 degree Maxatlan, probably your accumulator is leaking down too fast. The pump shouldn't randomly run. Go to Ronnies site and get a new accumulator.

farnelle Posted January 23, 2013 Posted January 23, 2013 You could also go to Reatta.net and print off the brake test. Take the test and it may also point to the problem or confirm the accumulator is bad.
Bushwack Posted January 27, 2013 Author Posted January 27, 2013 New accumulator solved the problem. Thanks everyone for the help.
