With my husband's retirement, we have decided to expand our participation in both regional and national car shows. This being our first trailer experience we would greatly appreciate what size, post-90699-143139339478_thumb.jpgaxel weight and other features we should consider. We will be hauling a '48 Lincoln Continental at 4000# pulled by a Nissan Armada with 10,000# towing capability. Your advise is welcome. Thank you

Purchasing a trailer is like buying a car, everyone has an opinion of what is best.

I can almost assure you that any comments I make can be argued as to another way and every one will be correct.

What part of the country is your home.

Will you be towing in hills often.

The Appalachian mountains are shorter but steeper than in the western states.

Are you going to use an open or closed car trailer?

An open aluminum unit will weigh about 1,200 pounds and a steel one will be 2,200. Most closed trailers are aluminum.

Weight of the trailer and car are your enemy for climbing hills, cornering, and gas millage.

Don't purchase a trailer until you load the car and tow it.

Open trailers will be about 16 feet with a 2 foot dove tail and are sometimes referenced as 18 foot.

A 5 foot ramp maybe too short and a 6 foot will work better.

With duel axles, some trailers come with electric brakes on only one axle, others on both axles.

An open trailer will come with an open center, a solid wood floor or a solid steel floor, or an all aluminum unit.

Prices will start as low as $2,000 and go to $6,000.

Look for tie downs built into the trailer bed.

A storage box on the front or under the floor is nice.

An electric tongue jack is nice but not required.

You will need a spare tire, I don't know when but plan on it.

My personal preference is to use an equalizer hitch with an anti sway bar.

However, most people do not use them.

It is easy to control the tongue weight on the truck's hitch by moving the car forward & back on the trailer.

Visit a couple of dealers and quiz them on there idea the ideal setup.

If you can, talk with experienced club in trailing their car.

Why not drive the Lincoln? To me that is the fun of owning and showing the car. V-12 with O>D> will handle 60mph and they are fun to drive. Lee Waldren Ft. Myers

We think we may be running into low compression issue. We have been quoted $10K-$15K for a complete rebuild. A trailer is much cheaper and will accomplish what we want to do without all the drama and expense of a V-12 rebuild. She runs well but we question dependability for a long run?
