Guest jmar183
Do i need to remove the fenders to remove the grille?
RivNut
No, just make sure that when you take off the bottom nuts that hold the grill to the lower valance that you get the studs out with the nut. Put a jam nut on each as you take them off and you should get the stud with the nut.Ed
1965rivgs
No. Remove the nuts and studs from the bottom of the grille and it should come out without much fuss. Tom
RockinRiviDad
Jmar183, good question. I am new to this forum thing and I should ask more simple questions like yours. I could've used the answer to your question too a week ago. Here's how my grill removal process ended up due to not asking questions lol

Guest jmar183
ok stupid question what is a jam nut? do the bottom studs thread out or do i need to pull them out. sorry im new to this Edited January 14, 2013 by jmar183 (see edit history)
RivNut
Two nuts the same size tightened against each other. The makes it impossible to turn either nut. Then you use the nut closest to the point the stud is being removed from and turn it the directioin you want it to go - counterclockwise if you're removing it, clockwise if you're installing it. The two nuts tightened together will not move, but the stud to which they're attached will.Ed

RockinRiviDad
Don't mean to hijack. But on the same grill subject…how/who straightens these grills? I had a ball hitch almost go thru mine (long story). How can I repair/restore it?
RivNut
It's been my experience that die cast aluminum only bends once. If you try to straighten it, it will break. I have an assortment of 63 / 64 cast aluminum wheel covers that could use some tweaking. I've yet to find a way to do it successfully. You'll probably have to find a good used one.Ed
Guest Rob J
David, grills are plentiful. I would not bother trying to straighten one. Replace. I have an extra one, but do not remember what condition it is in.
RockinRiviDad
Ok, replace, sounds good. I found this one for $140 is that a fair price? Don't know what they run. The guy claims its got a minor dent here in on the lower driver side corner(Picture of grill upside down)The guy selling it is only an hour drive away tooDavid'65 Riviera, Deluxe, A/C

1965rivgs
David, When shopping for a used `65 grille pay attention to the upper mounting tabs. They are often cracked. Also, check the chrome in the area of the battery. Quite often battery acid will have its way with the drivers side of the grille. RockinRiviDad
Thanks Tom. The guy selling one was kind enough to send me a closer pic of a damaged one he is selling for $140. Is that a fair price for this kind of damage? It's on the driver side. Maybe it's like you say, battery acid?David'65 Riviera, Deluxe, A/C
