Mark Simmons
Mr. Earl suh, I have a question or two for you as a fiddy-fo Buick expert. What would be the center to center measurement of the tires on the rear end of a '54 Buick Special? Also the ci and hp of the of the V-8 motor with a stick transmission on it's tailboard ? Lastly any ideas as to the gear ratio that Buick may have installed in the rear end when it came down the line all those years ago. Thank you in advance. Mark Simmons
THANK YOU Mr. Earl!!! I needed the information from you to make a decision an informed decision about buying the complete power train out of a '54 Buick that looks just like the one with it's nose in your barn/shop. If the power train is not frozen it may be installed in a '34 model 41 that is a project for the younger son and I. The '54 V-8 would add about 30 ci's and 50 hp's over what was in the car new and it will still be all Buick. The taller gears in the back won't hurt either. I still have to think this thing through though. Thank you again for sharing your knowledge and the time to do so. Mark
MrEarl
Sound interesting, would love to see that. Let me know if you need any more dimensions now or if you get it if I can help with anything then. Be very very careful when turning that 264 over for the first time as them little valves are prone to stick resulting in bent rods or worse. If the car has been sitting long, check the inside of the gear box and rear end for water and condition of the gears. Over years condensate accumulates and literally eats the gears up. Please keep us updated on this interesting project.
Mark Simmons
I've been through this several times before(Fords,Mercs,Chevys,Olds,Pontiacs and some odd balls) when we were both a lot younger, me and the projects that I took on. I hear what you're saying about the condensation been through that a time or to many in years past. No more bull in a china shop for me, costs to much in wasted time and money. I will try to get enough movement out of the motor to see that it's not frozen. Been through that ordeal as well with a '41 Pontiac six years ago. That thing was locked in place in all the cylinders, but that's another story altogether. Thank you for the kind offer of further assistance when needed. If this breeding does happen rest assured that I'll be yellin help and a lot other four letter words as well. Mark
