Guest shadetree77
I left work at 8 AM this morning and before going home I had to go to the bank. On my way to the bank, I passed a little white house that now serves as an occasionally open antique shop. Sitting outside the shop was an old black car. I glanced at it on the way by and did a double take....it was a beautiful '49 Super!! Wow! I did a u-turn and went to check it out. It was raining and pretty early so no one was around. I decided to come back a little later in the day to see if I could talk to the owner.I went back a few hours later and knocked on the door. No one was there. There was no phone number or hours listed. I walked next door to a small car lot and the lot owner told me he thought that the building was owned by a couple that run a large antique mall on the other side of town. I was familiar with this store so I went back outside, snapped a few pictures, and headed to the other place. After talking with the owners, it turns out they DO NOT own that property. They were able to give me the name of the lady who does. Apparently, she is an elderly lady that ran an antique shop with her husband for quite some time. He passed away recently and she retired. They told me she only opens that shop "when she feels like it" which is not much from what I understand. They didn't have a number for her and the number listed in the phone book is disconnected. It did list an address though so I guess that will be my next stop. Didn't have time to go there today. It sure is a shame to see that beautiful '49 sitting out in the freezing rain. It looks to be a completely original car. If it was ever restored, it had to have been 30 or 40 years ago. The interior is a little rough around the edges but not bad. The chrome is pretty darn good. Just a little rust and smokiness around some of the bumper edges. The paint looks original to me. It looks glossy in the pictures because it is wet but up close it looks like very old paint that has lost some of it's gloss in spots. It has a little "crazing" in spots. The tail light lenses are fogged and stress cracked. It has column shift, no Dynaflow. I didn't think to look at the mileage (duh!). I would be willing to bet it has the original straight eight under that hood. It does look like the rims have been re-painted at some point. They are awful nice to be original. Who knows though? This beauty might have spent the last 60+ years in a little old lady's garage! Can't believe I ran across this so randomly!I'll post if I find out anything else. Here are the pictures I took. Oh, and another random Buick find too. While browsing around the antique mall I purchased a 1958 hub cap to hang on my wall. I darn near tripped over it in the store! This has been a Buickful day! 49_buick_super
Robert,Did you get a close look at that trim strip along bottoms of the doors and front fender, both sides? Can't say I've ever seen that before on a 49 Super. Did that look like an after-market trim piece? That's a solid-looking car. Nice photos. Thanks for posting them.Dan
Pete Phillips
I too, have never seen a '49 Super with a rocker panel molding like this one has. With the standard shift, these cars are quite responsive and quick, a real pleasure to drive.Pete Phillips, BCA #7338
MrEarl
Love those 49's. I have seen those chrome rocker panel strips on some 54's but they were being used to cover up some poor bondo work. I don't think this is the case with this 49 though. That is a sweet granny car.

MrEarl
OMG, Robert (and all). Apparently I somehow edited your initial post when I copied and pasted your text into my previous post. I must have hit edit instead of reply when I went in to copy the text or SOMETHING. I am SO SO sorry. It was such a great story. Please please forgive me. Can you please attempt to rewrite it.I guess that's what happens when you give moderator status powers to an idiot. I owe you one dude.
Guest shadetree77
No problem Lamar. I went to google and searched for the title of my post then opened googles cached version of this page, copied and pasted the text back here. You know that old saying, "Sh!t Happens!". Lol. No harm done buddy. Thanks for the apology though. And to everyone else, I'll try to do some more sleuthing ASAP. If it's still there when I go back I'll get some pix of that rocker trim. MrEarl
Wow, that was a smart trick. Will have to remember that one. Thanks for pullin me out of that one.
avgwarhawk
Looking at the pictures I would say this car keeps residence there. There rubber mat under the noise is evidence of that. Keep after it Robert. This might be one of those windfalls were the owner is willing to part with the Buick at a reasonable price. There is always hope. Then again, she could be a pistol packing grandma who takes no prisoners when it comes to the Buick. We all understand that!!!!
Guest 75RivGS
Where is/was the Buick dealer (Trotter) situated? I can only find a 'Trotter' dealership in Springfield, OH. The letters for the city in that photo are too small to read. Was only wondering if the 49 is a local car.
Guest shadetree77
The tag reads Trotter Buick Chattanooga, TN. There was a Buick dealer in Chattanooga called Amos and Andy Buick from 1957-1966. It was owned by Mr. Amos Trotter. I guess "Amos and Andy Buick" wouldn't fit? So it does appear to be a local car. Most likely a trade-in.

oldwood
He 's probably trying to figure out how to drive a 3 on the tree so he doesn't have to ask the "old lady" to take him for a test drive. I think I've said to much now. LOL
Guest shadetree77
This thread is 3 days old and you haven't bought the car YET??? Your SLACKING!!!Lol. I''ve been checking the mail every day for that cashiers check you're sending me Dorsey! You got that in the mail yet?? And you're not too far off about the 3 on the tree. I've only driven one manual in my entire life. My family just never owned many. It was an old 70's Chevy stepside pickup with an inline 6 and a 3 on the tree. I drove it down a dirt road while on a fishing trip with my Dad. I did alright until a car came the other way and I had to pull over....ON A HILL. I could not get that thing going again. I panicked when it kept rolling backwards!! I think I was about 14 or so at the time. Wish we still had that old truck. I love those old stepsides. Anyway, I'll get back on the case of the '49 some time this week.Chris, from what I've been told about this "little old lady", I'd go with your "pistol packing grandma" assessment. I've been told she always put HIGH prices on her antiques and didn't like to haggle. Buying it is pretty much out of the question for me right now but I would like to find out more about it. That way if it is for sale, maybe someone here can save it. It would make a wonderful daily driver for a Buick aficionado!
oldwood
Sound like you may be earning a finders fee. I thought you were sending me a CHECK. But it may have been NIXON or was it Johnson or Clinton, I remember now it was MONICA!!! yuk yuk yuk
