Bushwack
If you have a 1970s car or earlier, you might be able to get a retro plate (yellow & black). Info here: License To Thrill! wws944
I hope they go through with it. Would have been nice if they had extended it to cover the late-'80s plates with the block "California" letters - which would be more correct for our Reattas than the current script version.Next they should drop the requirement for the front license plate - as 19 other states currently have. You would think they would notice that it would cut the cost of license plate production nearly in half...
Vincent Vega
I wish Wisconsin would go back to the yellow plates with black lettering. I really don't care for the graphic on the current plates
Howard
In Texas if your vehicle is 25 years old or older, you can use year of manufacture plates. Say you have a 65 Mustang, you can have 65 Texas plates. The state of Texas uses front and rear plates, so they must match and be in good condition. Some other states allow YOM plates as well. Vincent Vega
I do have the WI "Vehicle Collector" plate for my old cars. There are nice and plain. Light Blue/Red letters. I also have the regular plate with my collector number for my daily driver, but it is the same ugly plate as the standard plate.https://picasaweb.google.com/106835717534785703214/Cars#

The cut off for California YOM plates is (or at least was) 1963/4 as all plates issued since then are still legal and valid. The only issue has been that if the car lost its original plates or was brought into California years after it was manufactured you could not get new issue plates that looked like the old issue plates. Not sure exactly how authentic the retro plates will look as according to the FAQ page they will, like all modern plates in California, be reflectorized. It will be interesting to see them in person once they start to show up on cars.
