Roadster90 Posted December 26, 2012 Posted December 26, 2012 I finally have a house with a garage, and would like to change my auto insurance to one of the companies that offers collector insurance. I just called Hagerty, and since I have a garage that holds two Reatta, and I have a third Reatta (1990 coupe with 130k miles) that I use as a daily driver they would not insure me???? Can anyone suggest a company that would be able to handle my situation please? I have two low mileage roadsters I would like to insure under the collector guidelines, and 1 1990 coupe under a driver policy. My Select Sixty has 47000 miles I think, and the 91 roadster has about 57000 miles I believe. Thanks for any help,Nic
Barney Eaton Posted December 26, 2012 Posted December 26, 2012 I had the same problem with Hagerty several years ago and forgot about it until I purchased my '39 Buick, at that time I tried Heacock and have the '39 and the '91 convertible with them. Some companies will not do the Reattas because they are not old enough.
Bushwack Posted December 26, 2012 Posted December 26, 2012 My Reattas are covered by JC Taylor. I *think* they (like Grundy) require your daily driver to be no more then 12 years old but that requirement may have changed. Anyway, I found them about 15% less expensive then Grundy (and Hagerty wouldn't insure unless the cars were 25+ years old; as I was informed). From what I read, Grundy has come down significantly with their premiums and insurance requirements.
Guest Corvanti Posted December 26, 2012 Posted December 26, 2012 i have used Infinity for my older cars. i currently have my '51 Studebaker on an $18,000 "Agreed Value" full coverage policy for $114 a year. The bonus is, at least in NC, Infinity uses local (state) agents that provide other insurance companies for autos that are "drivers" and can't be locked up in a secure garage, storage area, etc.you may be able to get a deal where the 2 vehicles are insured with Infinity, and the "driver" with another company - but with the same agent - at a reduced price."your state may vary"!
trimacar Posted December 26, 2012 Posted December 26, 2012 My older cars are covered by an antique insurance company...but for daily driver 1969 Cutlass went to State Farm and very pleased with that company and approach to collector car insurance for drivers.....
ol' yeller Posted December 26, 2012 Posted December 26, 2012 Nic, my Reatta is insured thru Hagerty. I think that as long as another company insures your "driver", they will insure your collector cars. They do not insure "driver" cars. A lot changes quickly with Collector Car Insurance. About 5 years ago they would only insure a different Reatta of mine for a stated value but it had a $2,500 deductable. This last August, they insured my vert for stated value, no deductable. It helps if you have a good Hagerty agent rather than just calling Hagerty direct. I am very happy with Hagerty over the last 15-20 years I have been insured by them. They even insured my 2002 BMW as long as I met the requirements for their agreed value insurance. The car was not used for commuting, it was garaged and I had a "driver" car. I hope this helps. I'd recommend my Hagerty agent but I live across the country from you. If you'd like, I could ask him to recommend someone closer to you.
Guest my3buicks Posted December 26, 2012 Posted December 26, 2012 I have had Hagerty for years, and they never blinked when I added my Reatta in August.
countrytravler Posted December 26, 2012 Posted December 26, 2012 I have my daily driver and 34 Dodge street rod ( 392 with a 871 blower 800 hp) insured for 45.000 with AAA in CA. 180.00 for 12 months on the 34. 200.00 a year on my daily driver, a 2003 Buick SUV. 0 deductable on the 34 also.
Ronnie Posted December 26, 2012 Posted December 26, 2012 Nic, my '88 Reatta is insured by Hagerty at a very reasonable price. The only restrictions that I can remember are keeping the car in a garage and a annual mileage limit. I got Hagety insurance thru my local agent that insures my other daily drivers. My local agent handled all the paper work and took photos of the car to send to Hagerty for approval. Now Hagerty sends me an invoice each year and I send a check directly too them. I guess my local agent got a commission from Hagerty for signing me up. Check with some of your local agents. They may have a similar deal.
padgett Posted December 26, 2012 Posted December 26, 2012 I have had JC Taylor probably for 20 years now. During that time my DDs have been everything from a new Heep (tow car) to a Reatta. Right now I have two cars ('12 Heep and '90 Reatta) and an '86 RV on Geico and two Reattae and the Judge on JC Taylor. They just ask for photographs when I get something old. Next year the rate for the 88 may go down as it crosses 25 years. What happened and where did a S60 come from ?

I value a company a bit more for how well they process a claim vs looking for an inexpensive policy.
Gary D Posted December 27, 2012 Posted December 27, 2012 Seems to me that the best advise is to sit down with an independent insurance broker. I too got the "cold shoulder" from Hagerty...but my independent insurance broker hooked me up with Infinity / Classic Collectors. I have a stated value policy that is very inexpensive. Requirements include keeping the car garaged, and using the car for pleasure only. My policy allows me to drive 6000 miles per year.
ol' yeller Posted December 27, 2012 Posted December 27, 2012 FWIW...it someone can chime in...If they had to place a claim, how well did the insurance company handle it? I value a company a bit more for how well they process a claim vs looking for an inexpensive policy. The only time I had a claim was shortly after I first signed up with Hagerty. I had to replace a windshield on my '65 Skylark from rock damage. It was handled very quickly with no fuss and it cost Hagerty more to replace my windshield than I had paid so far in premiums. 15-20 years later, they have gotten their money back but have kept a satisfied customer. I think the reason the OP is having problems is because he is looking to insure ALL his cars with one company. Most stated value plans require you to have a separately insured daily driver car. It is upon that policy that they base their coverage and liability limits.
countrytravler Posted December 27, 2012 Posted December 27, 2012 The part that cost is the liability part. That is why the cost is low on the old cars. We have 20 cars insured with the prem about 4000.00 a year. They know that your not going to drive these cars on a regular baises. Prems will probaly go up because of Sandy. This is why you have to have a regular car for daily use when you have a old car to insure.
padgett Posted December 27, 2012 Posted December 27, 2012 Here is the JC Taylor requirements (19 years old or older)Factory original; i.e. there should be few changes from the factory original specifications. In good or restored condition.Be kept in a fully enclosed, locked garage.Be used primarily as hobby vehicles: used in exhibitions, club activities, parades, or other functions of public interest. An occasional nice day drive to keep the vehicle in running order is perfectly acceptable. We do NOT impose a mileage limit on our Antique/Classic Auto Insurance Policy. However, we do use a very reasonable underwriting limit.Club affiliation is not required. For me the major cost is the stated value part, still is under $400/year for three cars, two Reattae and the Judge.
countrytravler Posted December 27, 2012 Posted December 27, 2012 Half my cars are street rods, the others are stock. 1934 to 1968. AAA ins.
Roadster90 Posted December 29, 2012 Author Posted December 29, 2012 Thanks for all of the replies Gentlemen. As suggested I will speak with my SafeCo / general Agent next week when they open after the holiday. If that doesn't afford any desired results I will start calling some of the individual companies that you folks have suggested beginning with JT Taylor suggested by Padgett. Thanks again,Nic
