I pulled the manual trans out of my 48 so i could clean it up and replace the rear seal and torqe ball seal. I realized that the input shaft was loose so i started calling around for prices to have it rebuilt( I to chicken to open it myself) and one person who works on nothing but old trannies said that its ok for it to be alittle loose. So if this true how much wiggle is ok and how much is to much? Ive been looking in the book for this info but get quickly sidetracked by somthing else in it. I never had any problems with it when i was driving it other than it leaking.

Some sideways wiggle is normal. The input shaft is supported by only one bearing in the trans at it's aft end. The other, forward end, is supported by the pilot bearing in the end of the crank shaft. Now would be an EXCELLANT time to replace it. Place the trans in neutral and rotate the input shaft and feel for any roughness or uneven drag. If it feels smooth and you had no problems before it should be fine..........Bob
