SeniorSixCoupe Posted December 6, 2012 Share Posted December 6, 2012 Does anyone know what axle ratios were standard or available options from Dodge for a 2251 Senior Six?<!--[if gte mso 9]><xml> <w:WordDocument> <w:View>Normal</w:View> <w:Zoom>0</w:Zoom> <w:TrackMoves/> <w:TrackFormatting/> <w:PunctuationKerning/> <w:ValidateAgainstSchemas/> <w:SaveIfXMLInvalid>false</w:SaveIfXMLInvalid> <w:IgnoreMixedContent>false</w:IgnoreMixedContent> <w:AlwaysShowPlaceholderText>false</w:AlwaysShowPlaceholderText> <w:DoNotPromoteQF/> <w:LidThemeOther>EN-GB</w:LidThemeOther> <w:LidThemeAsian>X-NONE</w:LidThemeAsian> <w:LidThemeComplexScript>X-NONE</w:LidThemeComplexScript> <w:Compatibility> <w:BreakWrappedTables/> <w:SnapToGridInCell/> <w:WrapTextWithPunct/> <w:UseAsianBreakRules/> <w:DontGrowAutofit/> <w:SplitPgBreakAndParaMark/> <w:DontVertAlignCellWithSp/> <w:DontBreakConstrainedForcedTables/> <w:DontVertAlignInTxbx/> <w:Word11KerningPairs/> <w:CachedColBalance/> </w:Compatibility> <w:BrowserLevel>MicrosoftInternetExplorer4</w:BrowserLevel> <m:mathPr> <m:mathFont m:val="Cambria Math"/> <m:brkBin m:val="before"/> <m:brkBinSub m:val="--"/> <m:smallFrac m:val="off"/> <m:dispDef/> <m:lMargin m:val="0"/> <m:rMargin m:val="0"/> <m:defJc m:val="centerGroup"/> <m:wrapIndent m:val="1440"/> <m:intLim m:val="subSup"/> <m:naryLim m:val="undOvr"/> </m:mathPr></w:WordDocument> </xml><![endif]--> The only significant performance issue I am having with my car is that is seems to be very low geared. At speeds approaching 50 mph (80 kph), the engine is laboring much too hard. The car seems happiest at 40 mph, but I cannot believe that the cruising speed would be that low given the size of the engine. I am hoping a taller final drive will give me 60 mph without sending the pistons through the bonnet. Thanks.Mike Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
2251DB Posted December 6, 2012 Share Posted December 6, 2012 MY 2251 ORIGINLY HAD A 4.72 TO 1 I HAVE FITTED A 4.27 TO 1 FROM A 4 CYLINDER DODGE AND THE CAR PERFORMANCE IS ACCEPTABLE WITH A COMFORTABLE CRUISING SPEED AROUND 45MPHTHE EARLIER 2249 WERE FITTED WITH A 4.16 AS IN THE EARLY DODGE FOURS AND I AM LED TO BELIEVE THE 2249 OWNERS ARE HAPPY WITH THE PERFORMANCEMY 26 DODGE FOUR SEDAN CRUISES EASILY AROUND 45MPH WITH THE 4.16 RATIOI HAVE THOUGHT OF CHANGING THE DIFF RATIO OF THE 2251 SEDAN HOWEVER THE OVERALL PERFORMANCE WILL CHANGE ,ACCELERATION AND HILL CLIMBING WILL SUFFERHOPE I HAVENT CONFUSED THE ISSUE Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

gundog99 Posted December 11, 2012 Share Posted December 11, 2012 It is worth comparing the tyre DIAMETERS of different tyre manufactures, they can vary by .75"; the larger the better. I have fitted 19 x 600/625 on my 2249 which adds about 7MPH to the top speed, it runs much quieter in the 30 / 40 mph range. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Ron Lawson Posted December 11, 2012 Share Posted December 11, 2012 Hello Anthony,How interesting. We both have Australian bodied 2249s and yours runs on 19" wheels and mine has 20" with 5-50x 20 tyres Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
gundog99 Posted December 12, 2012 Share Posted December 12, 2012 I much prefer 20" wheels ,they look much nicer on a car than the 19". You car must be a very early 2249 ;according Aug/Sept 2001 article Dodge changes from 20" to 19" in July '27 before the RHD model was introduced.I wounder if your car was a special order or did Dodge used up it's stock of 20" on export models. P Bohlig Posted December 13, 2012 Share Posted December 13, 2012 Per the parts book, Page D-3-3 Drive gear and pinion matched:2251 up to IS-26211 4.454 to 12251 after IS-26211 4.454 to 12251 up to IS-26211 4.727 to 12251after IS-26211 4.727 to 12251 no number 4.75 to 1My '28 Std 6 uses the 4.454 and I keep wanting to shift into the nonexistent 4th or 5th gear. Believe they were made to pull on the bad roads then available. Read one time about a person using a modern Chevrolet S-10 transmission but cannot find anything now. Believe the liability would be too much for encouraging people to go high speeds in cars not eqipped with all the stuff our modern cars have.Paul Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Ron Lawson Posted December 13, 2012 Share Posted December 13, 2012 I have to correct my last post. With a chassis # IS-21655 makes my car also a late August 1927 build Just out of curiosity gundog what is the chassis # of your 2249? Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

2251DB Posted December 16, 2012 Share Posted December 16, 2012 Interesting point gundog99 about tyre size1928 senior six 2251 sedan 5.25/5.50 x 20 Universal has a manufactures tyre diameter of 32.5 inch (4.27 ratio ) restored 2 years 40-45 mph1927 senior six 2249 roadster 5.50 x 20 Bridgestone 32.16 (4.16 ratio) unrestored1928 standard six tourer 5.25 x 21 Firestone 31.5 (4.45 ratio) restored 40 years 40-45 mph1926 dodge 4 sedan 5.25 x 21 Firestone 31.5 (4.16 ratio) restored 16 years 40-45 mphWhere I live in the statE of QUEENSLAND AUS our cars usually have the larger tyre size used eg.21 inch instead of 19 inch than cars of the lower states because of our bad roads ,somehow they havent improved much the 1926 dodge 4 sedan was origionally fitted with 24 inch wich gave an overall tyre diameter of 34 inch with a diff ratio of 4.16 the poor old car lacked performance when we dropped the tyre size to 21 inch the performanse greatly improved 45 mph comfortablyOnce again the rules seem to change with export cars and in Australia the confusion is even greater especially as our cars are dated from January to December insteadof June to June .Somthing to think about .Also looking for a 4 gear whe driving th 6 cylinder cars2251 db9 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Guest MidTNDawg Posted December 21, 2012 Share Posted December 21, 2012 idrjoe did the B-W T5 conversion and says it is easy. But seeing some pics of his work, easy for Joe may be impossible for some of us. Also FWIW the ratio in my DA Deluxe is 4.77 to 1. Talk about geared low.
