fordmerc Posted December 5, 2012 Posted December 5, 2012 Can someone tell me or direct me to a step-by-step gas tank removal ('41 120 sedan)One of my concerns is the filler pipe- if it is attached to the tank. If looks as if I removed the rear strap attachments I could pull the tank down and out were it not for the filler pipe, and sending unit wires which aren't visible. Any guidance would be appreciated.
HH56 Posted December 5, 2012 Posted December 5, 2012 No hints but you might ask your question at packardinfo.com. A poster there just removed the tank on a 41 110 and said getting the spout thru the body and frame was an "exercise in math/geometry". Perhaps he could elaborate.
Dave Mitchell Posted December 7, 2012 Posted December 7, 2012 You will have to take the wires off when you get the tank down at an angle, if no one has provided you an access hole in the trunk floor. The gas line also has to be disconnected and line wrenches are a good idea. You will have to have the car up on jack stands or a hoist to get enough room to tip the right side of the tank down, but it will come out. The T shaped bolts on the straps often break if they are rusty. Liberal treating for a few days with penetrating solvent may help. Feel free to email me. packard12s@hotmail.com
jbbuick22 Posted December 7, 2012 Posted December 7, 2012 Right side down and rotate, it will have the be on lift or high jack stands. JB
Guest Foggy norm Posted December 15, 2012 Posted December 15, 2012 (edited) I was having problems with a 41 110, swore it was installed before the body was put on the frame. Contemplated cutting it at the filler neck. I wrestled with it, on and off taking a cool down break, from time to time. Called a couple of people, who clained it would come out, with the car raised about 14 inches, good, it was high enough on the jack stands. A buddy stopped by to watch me grumble and mumble, and asked what the problem was. I said, You Try it!, I turned to get something and hear'd the tank it the floor. Honest-to-pete! 3 seconds...he had it off!....and he's not mechanically inclined! Un-believing what just happened, I said put it back on, wham! 3 seconds....Take it out!...ZIP! done! S O A B! Perhap's if your still having a problem....call a friend, hee hee Edited December 15, 2012 by Foggy norm (see edit history)
doc harper Posted April 1, 2017 Posted April 1, 2017 I put the car on a lift and take out two body to frame nuts and jack the left side of body up about a inch and they come out easy. I used a under lift jack stand and let the car down just a little on the last one and that was real easy
