I have a 41 m-5 , It has the pillar ID plate ,Frame tag is patially there and matches ID , Cab # plate also there. This truck has a stakebed on it and I am trying to verify if it is factory or not , The wood rails on the frame are pefectly contoured to the frame and look like what a wagon builder would do.

SER # m-5-270 ; mod# m-5-13 , Any help in verifying this configuration would be appreciated. Also I will be selling or ebaying this so contact if interested

Thanks

You can get a copy of the original production order from the Studebaker National Museum. That will be the only way to answer your question. I might add that Studebaker did not build truck bodies. They offered only the pickup box. If you wanted anything else it would have to be built by a body builder. They did a lot of truck body business through Edwards Iron Works located less than a mile from the plant. Some production orders might have the wording "send to Edwards for stake body" or something similar. For the museum production order: https://studebakermuseum.org/store/production-orders/

or you can call (574) 235-9714.

Since the last serial number for 1941 was M5-4685, yours is one of the very first M5 trucks. I'm not sure that the s/n makes it more valuable, though. The engine number should be something close, but there were more M15 trucks that used the same engine size, so your engine might be 1M-500 or so if it is the original engine. Engine number is stamped on top, left side, front corner of block.
