radionut98 Posted May 11, 2002 Posted May 11, 2002 Friend of mine asked me a question I couldn't
answer so here goes. Were there 2 grills
for the 1940 Ford sedan? One for the standard? and one for the Delux? Pictures of
1940 Fords show grill with vertical bars and
others show vertical bars with horizontal
bars on either side. What gives? Thanks
to all. Loren
Tom Deering Posted May 11, 2002 Posted May 11, 2002 Loren,
You're right. There were two distinctly different grilles used in '40. The '40 Standard grille looks like the '39. The '40 Deluxe has that distinctive grille that was used only in '40.
Tom
Guest 40LUV Posted May 12, 2002 Posted May 12, 2002 The hoods for '40 Standards & Deluxes were also different to match up to the top countors of the different grills. Additional trivia is that Standards came with only 1 taillight and 1 sun visor and had painted headlight doors instead of the Deluxe chrome versions.
1937hd45 Posted May 12, 2002 Posted May 12, 2002 More '40 Ford questions: Are '39 Deluxe and '40 Standard grills the same? Do all the '39 & '40 front fenders interchange, or do they differ to fit the different hoods?
Guest 40LUV Posted May 12, 2002 Posted May 12, 2002 '39 Deluxe and '40 Standard grills will both fit into the same opening between the fenders, but they don't look exactly the same beyond the basic shape. The '40s have cast grill sides which are painted body color and have a chrome center. The '39s look like they're made of stamped sheet metal and they have individual stainless trim clipped on to each grill bar. I've been told that the curvature of the front fenders just below the headlights are different between '39s & 40s, but I never could tell the difference visually. '39 Deluxe and both '40 Deluxe & Standard fenders will interchange. '40 Pick-Up fenders look like '40 Passenger Car fenders, but they are shorter and won't interchange (but the Standard Pass Car & P/U grill is the same). One thing I've noticed while looking at 39/40 front fenders at Hershey over the years is that there are 2 different V knotch shapes (to clear the headlight door screw) at the bottom of the hole for the headlight bucket assembly. I assumed that the V knotches were different for the 2 years, but I've never seen it documented.
