Guest ambr607 Posted November 23, 2012 Posted November 23, 2012 I had already converted to an internally regulated alternator. Now, as part of the rebuild, I'm adding a Pertronix ignition and rewiring the whole car using an American Autowire generic harness. I've been able to work through most of the minor differences but I'm stumped on the ignition switch. The new harness is based on a 4 pole switch (IGN, BAT, ACC, SOL) but the Special has IGN1, IGN2, BAT, GND, SOL, ACC. IGN1 goes to the coil through a resistor which I don't think I need anymore and IGN2 goes straight to the coil. Start position uses IGN2, BAT, and ACC while run position uses IGN1, ACC, and BAT. Do I just run two wires to the coil or jump IGN1 and IGN2?GND is tied in with the temp switch so I'm guessing it's just an open/closed deal to trigger the idiot light.Another related issue is the GEN warning light. I had it working with the alternator (on with key then went out as soon as the engine started) but with this rewire I'm not sure I can tie it in.Sure could use some help from those who have gone before me.

Guest ambr607 Posted November 26, 2012 Posted November 26, 2012 Tech support at American Autowire was very helpful. Either run two wires to the coil or jump IGN1 to IGN2. The reason for the old set up was apparently the car would not start on 12 volts hence the resistor dropping IGN1 to 9.6 volts then releasing the key to IGN2 and running on 12 volts. With the coil I bought along with the Pertronix I no longer need the resistor in place but I will need power from both IGN positions for the car to start and run. The GND position is simply a bulb check for the idiot lights.
